I found it very appaling that in our newly built animal shelter, a gas chamber would be installed. North Carolina doesn't even offer this as an option for convicted killers, why should animals be subjected to this cruel and horrifying executions?
I have created a website at
http://www.freewebs.com/tnyrk/ on this subject and also a nationwide petition at http://www.gopetition.com/online/19110.html

Take some time to visit this site and get educated on this topic, watch the video, and look at the media.  It is important to be aware of what is happening in your community. I have also listed other alternatives to this barbaric treatment on these sites. Type in your name to sign the petition and make a difference.

I am interested to see what you think about this topic and I will be updating information as I recieve it on my website. Please post some responses and take a stand for a good cause, for the voices that cannot be heard in Davidson County!

I just signed your petition. I live in Davidson county and I think this needs to be stopped! If you need any help whatsoever please let me know. I cringe every time I hear something like this. The sheriff's department does not need to be in charge of the animal shelter either.

I watched a story on the national news last night and it really had an effect on me it was about mother's day and it was an award for mother of the year, and it was about a dog in a shelter that had puppies all of which had been adopted, and a litter of kittens that had been abandoned and the dog nursed the kittens then they went on to show other stories were animals had mothered completely different species of animals one case were a big cat had killed a baboon and then fed and raised the orphaned baboon. I have always been fond of dogs but after reading these blogs and the Michael Vick and police dog events I had become disgusted with pet ownership but this story showed me that animals are far more advanced than humans and would be better off if we left them alone! We can learn a lot form animals they have it right we are lacking I still will never own another pet after the one I have now but I will look for the lessons they have to offer. Now I got to run and put a hook in some fish!

I notice you delete comments when they don't agree with you. It's a discussion blog.

No, I deleted your original comment because it was not an accurate one. The Sheriff's department is in charge of the animal shelter and while you say that people can't help what their job involves, I say that you are wrong! Have you ever heard of ethics? Ethical treatment of animals also falls into this topic. If you would have actually read the news section of my website, you would have found that the worker interviewed prefered this method of ending animals lives over other means. So yes, I did delete your comment because It had no truth behind it. I am not trying to bash the sheriff's department at all, I am just wanting to see these animals get treated fairly and the sheriff's department is lacking in this matter. I am thankfull of the job that they do in protecting us and keeping our community safe. I do however think that someone else who cares about an animals well being needs to be in charge, and this gas chamber has to come to an end! This is un-ethical treatment for animals, and I think that we can all agree to that.

I am on my fourth rescued Samoyed in the past twenty-two years, so for me to watch the film was heart-breaking. I also know that the film you would have me watch was taken in 1990. The reason the sheriff's department is handling the program is because no one else will do it. Your efforts are commendable, but it will take more than a petition to change this. Why not spend time raising money for a no-kill shelter. It is one thing to cry foul on a situation, it's another to actually do something about it. In addition to a petition, you need to come up with a possible solution for the fact that acquiring a pet takes no more responsibility than someone saying I want one and either money or no money crosses hands. Again, it is a thankless job for which the sheriff's department is stuck with.

A suggestion: Perhaps you could contact one of the American pet-food suppliers to align themselves with your efforts to get the word out nationally. I'm suggesting that you come up with a solution to the problem, rather than just a complaint. Contact all the veterinarian schools, for placement of a student in this and other facilities. How many other counties in NC have gas chambers? In the US?

You know, everyone seems to forget one very important fact...humans domesticated dogs, cats, cattle, sheep, horses, etc. While we are at the top of the foodchain in this World, we fail miserably at being humane. When I say humane, I mean taking the time to be considerate and caring about the animals that are killed for food and not making them suffer unnecessarily before hand. I mean taking responsibility for the animals that you choose to own by spaying and neutering them so that so many do not have to be euthanized because they are homeless and not wanted. I mean giving compassion to the creatures that we have placed ourselves above in this World. It says a lot about us as human beings in the way that we treat God's creatures. It is an humbling experience to look into the eyes of a creature who loves to be with you and wants to stay by your side every moment possible...that loves you unconditionally, which is something that most humans cannot do. So many say "it's just a dog, or it's just a cat, or it's just a cow." If we cannot treat the creatures of this planet humanely, how can we ever truly treat each other humanely? The use of a gas chamber for unwanted animals is horrid...the fact that we have so many unwanted animals that have to be euthanized is even more horrid! People, please, please have your pet spayed or neutered. If you cannot afford to have it done, then accept the reality that you cannot afford to have a pet. Wait to get a pet until you can have this simple procedure done.

Check out what Sherriff Joe is doing...

Sherriff's in North Carolina could learn a lot from him.......and Guilford county would not need a new jail built

eholder,

That is part of the point that I am trying to make to Tnyrk. A condemnation of the last person on the totem pole, disregards every step that gets the unwanted animals to the shelter. It is harder to get the message out when you are making condemnations. I am suggesting that she get on the pro-side of the issue, by coming up with a solution and pushing the solution, instead of the past. That solution could be multi-faceted, by calling for mandatory spay-neuter programs unless you are a registered breeder. It is too easy to aquire a pet, therefore many people don't take it seriously. All of her current signees could take a role to push the agenda. I'm actually trying to be helpful here.

I have just taken on this mission (it hasn't even been a week yet), I think that adoption and prevention (spay and neuter) needs to be focused on, this is in my work. I can promise that there is more to come. I am trying to get in the grove and find out how to go about getting something changed in this world, I am not merely trying to file a complaint. I will have this changed and then I plan to move to a state and national level. The signatures from my petition are going to be taken to the County Commisioners to show that this issue is imporant to many (this is an election year and I do plan to use this to my advantage). I am also currently trying to get the word out through the media, and hopefully I can get the dispatch to show a pet of the week for adoption among other things. I have a lot of things that I plan on doing, like I previously said, this has only just begun. After this I plan on going to a state and national level, this is not right and it has to be changed, animals do not need to be gassed. I am using Davidson County (my home town) as start.
Sheriff Arpaio is doing a great job, this is how things should be in Davidson County.
FYI
The video on my website is there to show people what these animals go through (and that particular one is still being used today in NC). I'm sorry if was not recent enough for you but apparently shelters are not wanting individuals to video these horrifying acts, I wonder why...

I for one love animals and have taken the action of have my pet(cat) neutered. If everyone not registered breeders would take this action there would be no need for gas chambers. There are so many people that will ride down the road and throw out a dog or cat and keep right on going. Something should be done about that, there are some that abuse and neglect, something should be done. I am in no way saying that goa chambers are right and ethical, but.....Have you reserched other methods?
In Davidson County it takes only 25 seconds for the animals to go down. How long does the shot take? What does the shot do? Have you heard that sometimes the shot causes a heart attack, and causes the animal to suffer longer?
The only thing I ask, is that you offer all the alternatives and advandages and disadvandages to each and let everyone decide for themselfs before comdemning the only method used. Get video of all methods and then decide which one is best and go from there.

There are so many unanswered questions. Tynrk, although your cause is a good one, I am afraid that we are up against a wall with it...too many people have no regard for how animals are euthanized so long as it doesn't affect them. I am not telling you to stop what you are doing, I am just telling you that frustration will be your partner in this journey. I couldn't watch the videos. I have four beautiful companions who are dogs, one that is a cat, and five that are parakeets. I am, without a doubt, a hard core animal lover. One of my lovelies is a rescued boxer that was scheduled to be euthanized the day after I found her at the store front at Oak Hollow Mall. She and her mate were surrendered when the people using them for breeding decided they didn't want to do it anymore. Nellie was nothing but a rack of bones...bred into oblivion by people who were clueless! Nobody wanted her because she looked so bad! The girl at the store front begged me to take her because she knew that her time was almost up. I don't regret it for a minute...not one! She is a devoted and loving member of this family. I would much prefer us not to have a need for euthanasia than to change the manner in which it is done. As for my animals, all are altered except for the parakeets. That is a responsibility that I take very seriously and don't preach it without practicing it myself! I wish people would care. To care on the level of how we treat animals could teach us to treat each other better.
