I want to say as a Father that I am glad they found Michael today. I
know there were a lot of volunteers who helped in the search. There
were also a lot who were not volunteers that were getting paid and
equipment from like the State Highway Patrol such as the helicopter and
other stuff to from other agencies . My question will the cost fall back on the rest of the  tax payers
or will it fall back on the parents. My thing is I can understand
someone kidnapped, accidentally lost or something like that but when you leave to go
hitchhike back home is like running away. I think there is a
difference and someone other than taxpayers should have the pay the
cost. Plus any $$ that is made from any talk show interviews should go to pay for the search.

Everyone keeps jumping this kids case because he was homesick. Do people not remember being a kid and being away from home and being homesick?

As far as the cost of the yes, if the parents can afford to pay some of the cost that would be nice of them. But if the counties or states start charging for search & rescue operations then there will be some people that will be lost and not looked for simply because the family can not afford the service.

Well the homesick thing. I went off when I was young and was homesick all I did was sit around and did nothing, if he was so homesick he should have told someone to take him home or called his parents. If every kid ran off to go hitchhike when they are homesick there would be daily searches.

I don't understand why it cost so much. All they needed were a team of bloodhounds or search dogs.

They had his scent, they had a known last position, they knew about what direction he headed out in.

I mean really, unless this kid was Harrison Ford from the Fugitive, he should have been found in hours, not days with just a team of dogs. It's what dogs do. No need for helicopters or tons of people for that matter.

I bet that at the end of the day there were more people there with media covering the story than there were people searching. This thing got all kinds of national attention.

I'm glad that they found the kid. Much ado about nothing. The scary thing would have been had he been abducted - or had it been toward the middle of the winter during a REALLY cold snap.

'Frost nip' - haha, it set in right after he was really really cold, right after he was really cold, after he was cold, then after he was just chilly. These are all highly technical medical terms folks.

I have had to give a lifeless son back to his parents on no less than Christmas day. Get off this someone must pay because (whatever reason). Be thankful he was alive. No matter the odds, there are patriots that will be there to help; they do not ask for pay, they do not even ask for a thank you. 70 % of emergency services are volunteers. Now someone calling repeatedly for nothing aggravates me but it might be that one call that it is something. Look at this as high quality training. Now we have something to base our response on. The next incident will go smoother. And as sure as the sun rises tomorrow there will be something else. I will take this opportunity to say thank you to our emergency services personnel. We stand in the gap, when no one else will, not for money, not for fame, but because it’s the right thing to do.

I can't think of a better use for my tax money. A couple dollars from each of us for the life of a child, no problem. I guess I empathize a little more since I have a son that age, I could not begin to imagine the anguish the family experienced. It is comforting to know that the resources are available, and there is a strong volunteer force available when something like this happens.

I can't believe that anyone would even suggest that the family pay for the search. While you are correct about what the kid should have done, a child of 12 who is homesick doesn't think rationally. I too have been homesick and wanted more than anything to go home but had no way. You suggest that he tell someone to take him home but the scout leaders were there and had other kids to watch so they could not have left.
When you think of all the money wasted every day supporting the illegals in this country and the people that are too sorry to work, the amount paid to find this child, "alive" was well worth every penny. In addition, the volunteers were available to do a thorough search but was turned away by the Federal Employees of the park because it is Federal property.

I'm happy and relieved that they found the boy alive.
I agree that the only goal should be to find a person regardless of why they get lost.
I'm thankful for anyone thatl will volunteer and the emergency workers.
My suggestion for groups that go off camping and especially scouts and kids, that they be required to have at least a small flashlight and whistle. Most kids today have cell phones and should have them on them.
It still was a blessing and answer from God that he was found and alive. Praise the One that has control over ALL.
