I'm not shocked but a little concerned that every so often someone says, "Hey we have a problem with prescription drugs and our kids."  Then everyone acts as if this is the first time that they have heard this message coming out.  Wake up folks, this has been going on for a very long time but people have turned their heads and acted like it wasn't really a problem.  Then someone dies or OD's, the family or the law enforcement agency gets on tv and we all talk about how bad prescription drugs are.  Next week, something else comes along to destract our attention and we just don't think about it for a while.  Am I right here?

The truth about prescription drugs is they are convenient or easy to get and don't have the social stigmas that comes with say, heroin or meth.  Also, they are BIG business in America.  The drug companies want you to be dependent on their pills.  They don't care if you are an adult or a teenager.  If you get addicted and have to go to re-hab, well they have other pills that you can take to help with whatever you were self-medicating for.  So you see, the "don't worry be happy" mentality kicks in and everyone feels better.  Especially the drug company's CFO's pocketbooks.

Parents do need to be more vigilant in keeping their own prescriptions out of reach.  Here's a hint.  Don't keep them in the medicine cabinet.  Duh!!!

Drugs and Money are to blame for some of our problems. The pharmaceutical companies have done good and harm to our children. They promote to doctors many drugs are children do not need. Parents need to evaluate for yourself if the drug is necessary. Of course the root of the problem can be traced to the 1970s when the family structured changed. This change effected our social and economic climate which in turn sent women in the work force and changed our lifestyles for arguably a worse condition. Yes, we all have the drugs we can get but do they really help your child? Would your child do better having a more stable diet at home with 3 meals a day? I ask you, what is the ROOT cause of using Ridilun?

Just a few thoughts...not all about the drugs but to address OReilly's thoughts.

Ritalin, while it might be over prescribed, does help in some cases with ADD and ADHD. The problem with Ritalin is, you can crush it up and snort it and it has effects much like cocaine. It is a controlled substance and you can make quite a good amount of money at school if you are selling it.

But drugs such as Ritalin should probably only be used as a last resort. You can have success with other behaviour modifications and dietary changes in a child with ADD.

Oh yeah... I have ADD and Ritalin helped me as a teenager. I made better grades and was less of a daydreamer in school. I don't think the ROOT cause of my ADD was anything attributed to my parents or our socio-economic status which was middle class and both my parents have successful careers.

Every parent must guage for themselves what they think is best for their children. If that is staying at home as a mother - then sometimes you do what you have to.

In my personal life I have had to make that choice. In 2005 I had a baby that was born at 25 weeks and he had to stay at Brenner's for three months. We did not initially expect him to live. At the time I had a job with a local company as an HR Assistant. I had to give that job up to stay home with my child, which was the best thing to keep him from getting sick after his hospitalization. Since then I have had another baby and it doesn't make sense to go back to work when the children need me here.

Yes, the human condition can be argued to be worsened for wo

I am a 35 year old stay at home mom who is married and has four wonderful children. I enjoy kayaking, see my pictures of me and my husband on Oak Hollow lake last year. My kids are great, I have two toddlers, a six year old and a 12 year old step-daughter. There are soooo many things I am interested in that I won't bore you with a long list. Most of the time whatever we are doing it is family related. I believe it is important to be connected to your family...I have a wonderful mom and dad to thank for that. I love critters, I have a Lionhead Bunny named Pippin, after one of the Lord of The Rings hobbits, and a guinee pig named Guinee..(how original right?)I'd have more furkids if my husband would let me. Music is one of my passions, I love the guitar...wish I could play better than I do. My favorite all time Rock band is Queen...Freddie Mercury could sing like an angel. Favorite movies...we watch A LOT of movies... Pans Labyrinth Lord Of The Rings (all three) The Wizard of Oz Stardust (if you haven't seen this movie yet you have to rent it...) Night at The Roxbury Pretty in Pink Neverending Story Bridge to Teribithia I guess that is enough about me...are you MEGO yet?
