Here is something I do not understand. There was plenty of warning before Ike hit the Gulf coast. There was a mandatory evacuation order. Accomodations were being made for animals and those with handicaps or illness were moved to a safer place. Millions heeded the warning, but millions chose not to. Those that chose not to leave were told that they faced imminent death or injury if they chose to stay. During the height of the storm people were calling 911 to be rescued and got upset when emergency personel told them to A. keep an ID on them so they knew who they were if they found them, and B move to higher ground if possible, we cannot get there. Now what part of mandatory evacuation did they not understand? What part of dangerous, deadly storm did they not understand? There is absolutely nothing material that is worth risking their lives for. Material items can be replaced. Lives of people and pets cannot. And I think that it was and is wrong for those who chose to stay to expect emergency workers to come rescue them and risk their own lives, when they could have saved themselves days earlier. They knew the risks. I for one would get the heck out of Dodge if I were warned of imminent death. And since my son is an EMT, it would make me a little more than upset if he went out to rescue one of those holdouts and lost his life in the process. Wake up ya'll. If they say its a deadly storm, its a deadly storm. Get out of there

Since I work for a company that is much like the following, here are some new rules that will probably soon be posted
Attention All Employees! These are the new rules we are implementing to keep our production standards high. Please read carefully
1. Sick Days: There will be no more sick days, even with a note from your doctor. If you are well enough to drive to the doctor you are well enough to drive to work
2.Surgery: This will no longer be tolerated. You will not be allowed to removebody parts and organs , add parts or, have any parts altered. We hired you intact and to do such surgery would be a breach of contract, and you will be subject to dismissal
3. Funerals: the death of a friend, co-worker or family member will no longer be considered as an excuse for missing work. Your attendance will not bring the deceased party back. However if you are the one arranging the services, please schedule the services as late in the day as possible. We will allow you to work through your lunch hour and get off one hour early, provided you work is finished
4. Your Own Death: This is the only excused absence you will have from work, however we must have 2 weeks notice so you can have time to train a new person to do your job.
5. Vacation: vacation days will be as follows, Jan. 1, July 4, and Dec. 25. Pay is up to discretion of employer
6. Bathroom Breaks: you will be allowed to go to the bathroom between the hours of 9-9:15 a.m. You will go alphabetically by using the first letter of your last name. If you miss your turn you will have to wait until your time tomorrow. However in the case of an emergency yo may trade with a co-worker but only if approved by the supervisor in writing.
7.Paper Products: The rising cost of toilet paper and paper towels make it too costly to provde these things for free. A dispenser for TP is in each stall, one sheet is 5 cents, but machine only takes quarters. Paper towels are 10 cents each. We prefer you dry your hands on your shirt
8. Lunch: Lunch breaks will be as follows. Skinny people get 1 hour. They need to eat more to gain eight to be strong for their job. Normal sized people get 30 minutes. They need only to maintain their healthy weight. Overweight people will only get 10 minutes. That is how long it takes to drink a Slim-Fast and take a diet pill
I'm not kidding, I work for a place that this is almost the norm

Thanks to Fox8 for their news story they did about the dangerous intersection of Hickswood and Willard Roads and the many people who have contacted either the city or state, here is the latest news about it.
It seems as though someone has finally paid attention and city and state are working on a plan to make improvements to the intersection. There is a plan to make the intersection a 4 way stop. Also they intend to do improvement to the corners of Hickswood to make it easier for people who are stopped on Hickswood to see traffic approaching on Willard. They are also considering reducing the speed limit on Hickswood between Willard and Deep River. Hopefully this will greatly help the dangerous situation at this intersection.

Something needs to be done to the intersection of Willard Road and Hickswood in High Point, today an innocent man lost his life there, enjoying a ride on his motorcycle, when a speeding car ran the stop sign and hit him. A life lost, a family devastated because someone was not paying attention. But maybe it could have been prevented if someone would listen to residents in this area. Since July 1st there have at least four that I have run to with phone in hand calling 911, another one involving a bike but that rider was thankfully only slightly injured
I have lived in my home on Hickswood for 30 years, I have seen numerous accidents, some worse than others, but in recent years, since Hickswood has become a cut-through for the many new neighborhoods, and the stop light they use to get onto Eastchester, the accidents at this intersection have become almost a weekly thing, and no one will isten to the fact that maybe a flashing red light would help. Hickswood is notorious for drivers not paying attention, the drunk drivers leaving the bars, and speeding. Not a day goes by that I don't hear horns blow or screeching tires because they almost missed that stop sign.
I have contacted the state, no help there. We are working with the city to get help. Maybe they will listen. Sometimes I have nearly been hit by speeding cars just trying to get out of my driveway. Where do we find someone to listen? If they had before, maybe that innocent motocycle rider would still be alive and home with his family. My prayers are with them and I don't know who they are. And my prayers are with the man, who by not paying attention took another mans life. May God Bless all of you

Just to let you know both my husband and I have been trying hyper-mileing for 3 weeks now. And wanted to let you know that it has worked for both him and I.
I drive a 95 F-150 with a small block V-8. I drive 23 miles round trip to work 5 days a week.. For the last 3 weeks I have put 30 dollars in gas in my truck every Friday and have managed to make that gas last for 8 days. I drive on Wendover and Guilford College and have slowed down to the posted speed limit, much to the dismay of aggressive drivers on Wendover. Since I drive an automatic its harder to do, because it can ruin a transmission to go into neutral, but I take my foot off the gas going down the hills and just coast, and if I see the light ahead is red or an "old" green light I slow down and try not to use my brakes. Everywhere I need to shop is on my way home, and I try to make as many right turns as possible. However I do not roll through stop signs as some people are now doing which is illegal
My husband drives drives 50 miles a day from High Point to near Hanes Mall everyday. He drives a 5 speed Nissan truck. When he goes down hills he goes into neutral, slows down to below the speed limit. He does 55 on 311 and 40 west, but stays in the slow lanes. He has managed to run on 40 dollars a week and since his truck is a 4 cylinder we use that when we go anywhere.
Just wanted to let you all know that changing our driving habits, I used to be a speed demon, shopping locally, it has saved us a huge amount of money. If I filled up both tanks on my truck it would cost well over a hundred dollars. So it does work!

I want to know if this was some kind of omen or was Billy Yow channeling?
When I drove by Skip Altons house the other day, which looks like a mansion, there was a huge red-tailed hawk sitting on the chimney screaming. She was evidently not very happy with something. I wanted to get a picture, but it was in the middle of Vandalia road and a lot of traffic.
I was wondering what this could have meant. If Billy couldn't get through to Skip at meetings, maybe the hawk was sent to try it. Or maybe the hawk is Mr. Altons burglar alarm.

My grandson is 16 months old and is enrolled in a well known daycare in High Point. For the 5th time he has come home with serious bites on him caused by 1 child. My daughter has gone to the director about the problem and nothing has been done. She is paying quite a bit of money to keep my grandson in this daycare. The director refuses to do anything about it because she is friends with the offending childs grandparents. Does anyone out there have a suggestion as to what she can do? I suggested reporting the daycare to the state licensing board, because her son has as much right to a safe environment as the child who is biting. What else can she do short of pulling her son from the daycare which is convienient for her?
By the way I am now grammyx4!!! See pictures of newest grandson born June 23

Okay, I am all for doing my civic duty, and when I am called for jury duty I will take a day off of work (without pay, I get No benefits at my job), drive to Greensboro, (35 miles) to sit in a crowded room with 75 other people, all who came from Greensboro, only to have them wait until 3:30 to call for jurors, 26 needed and guess who was number 26.
Okay I earned 12.00 today and have to go back tomorrow, so add 20.00 So far it has cost me 25.00 in gas, got to get more tomorrow, and 200.00 in lost pay
Now I do not mind so much the fact that I was called to serve, but some changes need to be made, especially with gas prices the way they are. Why couldn't I go to High Point, 10 miles away. Why don't they ask perspective jurors if they get paid to be out of work. This is a severe hardship for me, and I am sure it is for a lot of others who receive a summons. I can't work overtime to make up the difference as my employer (illegally I might add, but gets away with it) does not pay overtime. Something needs to be changed. This day and time 12.00 will barely fill up a scooter, it gives me less than a quarter of a tank and I drive a 1995 truck. 32.00 gives me a half a tank and I still have to drive back and forth to work. I can put 20.00 in on Monday and don't need more till Friday because the only place I go is to work and I stop for food on the way home. Then don't get me started about those who have no child care, but have to be there anyway
Why doesn't the court system pay attention. There are retirees, self-employed and others who would like to serve. I get called every 2 years, my husband never gets called and I have heard of people who have never been called at all.
Changes need to be made. Someone in the court system needs to find a way to revamp things or at least send you to court in the town where you live, not 35 miles away. After all both High Point and Greensboro are in the same county

Traffic
I want to know if there is someone out there who can write me one of those special parking permits, so I can park in the fire lanes at grocery stores and shopping centers, so I can block the entrances and make it difficult for someone who is handicapped to get in and out of the stores. Is it possible I have to trade in my F-150 for one of those really expensive gas guzzlers, get my hair done, or just be too lazy to walk a few feet so I can get a fat rear-end, (oops, I already have one of the 3)

I have heard from reliable sources that some Guilford County powers that be want to start charging those of us who have wells for the use of our own water. They want to put meters on them just like meters on homes in the city and charge us usage. This is not fair. It cost me over 3000 dollars to have my well dug 10 years ago (the second one) the first cost about 2000 dollars about 30 years ago, plus another 1500.00 to have my well relined, not to mention the costs of 4 pumps in the same amount of time at a cost of over 200 each, plus digging up 18 inches of earth to run pipes, relaying those pipes, maintaining my well which is not cheap to do. When there is a power outage I do without water. I had to have the second well dug because when they started allowing developing next to me, our vein was cut into and we lost the water supply.
I am not the one who has over built in the area, I live in the Southwest High Point area. My water comes from deep in the ground, fed by mountain run off. It does not come from High Point City Lake or Oak Hollow. I do not get anything from the county taxes I pay, just increases everytime the wind changes directions. The city of High Point gives me nothing, event though I can step out my front or back door and be in the city. When I call for law enforcement I get theSheriff, I pay for my own trash pick-up. The only thing I have is a street light in my front yard that I did not want, unauthorized cutting of a 100 year old white oak tree, and headaches from the increased traffic on my street because of the 500 houses and apartments they have built. They are complaining about the drought, yet they continue to let developers build and build just for a tax base without one thought about the water supply until it is too late.
This is not fair for these people to even consider this. I do not live in the city because I do not want to be in the city. I pay my taxes like everyone else. I do not want their street lights, trash pick-up or paying for my water. I dare say I pay more for the use of my well than most homeowners pay for their city water. I will contact anyone I can, from the top to the bottom and start fighting.
If they want more money from me, by putting meters on my well, I will turn off my water, fill up my well, buy bottled water, and wash clothes at the laundry. Then they can pay for the cost of hooking me up to the city, plus the cost of putting new pipes in
