How Swede It Is

HONOLULU  --  Golf Channel suspended anchor Kelly Tilghman for two weeks on Wednesday for saying last week that young players who wanted to challenge Tiger Woods should "lynch him in a back alley."

Tilghman was laughing during the exchange Friday with analyst Nick Faldo at the Mercedes-Benz Championship, and Woods' agent at IMG said he didn't think there was any ill intent.

---

Flatch is sorry, but he just HAD to spew all over this.

Item 1 - I hate golf, but I know that Tiger Woods is God Incarnate to those that like the sport.  She would have been better off slandering the Pope, Jesus and Brad Pitt instead.

Item 2 - Does a broadcasting job strip you of common sense and decency?  I don't know this TV fluff Tilghman, but does she feel she is pretty enought to get a job anywhere?

I know, I know - my being spurned by the broadcasting industry is coloring these words, but I was taught in broadcasting school (stop rolling your eyes!) that someone is always listening and there is always someone to get your job if you scrog up.

Did she not learn from Tex Antoine, Imus and Steve Lyons?  Or was she born too late?

All I can do is let out a great big heaving Sheesh

Hoping this finds you...Flatch

P.S.  10 extra Viking points if you remember Tex Antoine.

Wow...That was stupid, but not surprising because I would guess she was too young to realize the the relevance of the term. More than likely, she was just saying words in an effort be cute, without having any racial or historical context.

This does not excuse her. In fact I would say it makes the comment even more disturbing.

Listen folks...it's time to get a life! Words are just that, words. They are only offensive if you take offense! Tiger didn't take offense. Yes, it was stupid, but this pot is wreaking and it's time to let BLEEP like that go. I feel sure that as soon as the words came out of her mouth, her producers were lining her up for a shot to the mouth! I could go on and on at the disrespect spouted at me by the black community because I bumped into somebody or something stupid like that. I get tired of the racial comments stabbed into my being by the very people who get upset over something like this. I get tired of being called a honkey or white cracker or even worse for nothing more than walking around. But I let it go...it needs to be let go! Whatever happened to do unto others as you would have them do unto you? And, Axe, I do get it...you don't get it.

Axekick,

It amazes me that you could be so judgemental about me. You don't know me. And yes, I do get it. I probably get it a lot more than you do. I've seen first hand, and been appalled by the aftermath of racist acts. So yes. I do get it.

If you think about it, what she said could actually be a good sign that there is a generation, now moving on from the ugliness of the past. Problem is, there are always a handful of folks waiting to react to every little thing and dredge up painful issues from a day when things were quite different. A day when there was no way the presidetial race we have today would be possible.

Yes, what she said was offensive. Did she mean it to be? I doubt it. Until we all learn to let such things go and not wear our feelings on our sleeves, nothing ever will really change. In fact, making a big deal about things like this really trivializes the real problems in the world.

Take the chip off your shoulder. Turn the other cheek. Learn to love. Anger, resentment and hate, only destroys the heart of the one in which these poisons reside.

A wise old man once told me, it takes a friend to be a friend.

Oh I get it alright stop making excuses for dumb ass comments oh she was young the Jena 6 were young too but I did not see one comment about their youth from a single white person in this community double standards plain and simple and Sharpton and others are not going to spare you alls ass, hard feelings or not it's a slap in the face to condemn comments like hers then turn around and make excuses for why she did she did it because that is what is in her heart, Bush just paid a visit to the middle east and he remembered the holocaust why is it I never here white people tell the Jews to stop living in the past when it comes to the holocaust? Their motto is forgive but never forgot and blacks should never forget the evil of slavery.

David I don't want to know you and that doesn't matter you made a dumb ass statement she was smart enough to land a job like that she knew better your excuse was lame end of story!

Axe...there you go. Yes, Axe, we do get it. Remembering the holocaust is a lot different than having Jews rub our noses in it when we didn't have anything to do with it. The Jenna 6? I would stand by them all the way because I don't think they were treated fairly! And, in spite or your own anger and resentment, I would stand by you if you were being wronged! Nobody is making excuses for the anchor. We're just saying that to make it a racial fight is wrong. She flubbed up...period! Think back, Axe. You strike me as the kind of person that would use racial slurs if the opportunity arose. Do you? If you do, you are part of the problem. Think hard...have you ever said things with racial overtones? I have seen numerous occasions on this blog where you have done so. But I do forgive you for it. I do not hate you for it. But I do hope that you can realize that perpetuating that behavior is the real problem.

Wow,

This is exactly why I usually try to avoid this type of discussion.

I'm sorry you don't want to know me. I hope that one day you can move past the anger and hatred that burns inside you, before it completely erodes your soul.

Unfortunately, this type of discussion needs to be had and it is because of the misguided hatred that is rampant in society. I think you made very appropriate points David. Axe, we are trying to help you understand that the anger that you have is dangerous. We are not discounting what happened in history, but we must move past it. Just because we do not use it to fuel the fire of hatred does not mean that we do not acknowledge it or appreciate the darkness of those times. We understand...we really do. But we must fix now, we cannot fix history.

Jeez Sinise, kids. I didn't want to stage the Jerry Springer show. Flatch was just hacked off that debris continues to thrive in the broadcasting industry and I never got a chance to make a significant and positive contribution thereto.

I didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition...

Well, Flatch, unfortunately there is a lot of hooey about the anchor's words. She made a mistake. It definitely was NOT a good thing to say. But, because she said it, the boiler of Al Sharpton gets to kicking and then the race card gets steamed up and everybody gets on the racist bandwagon. I don't know about you, but I am tired of racism! Give me a break! Put down the fingers and say to yourself "boy! that was a crummy thing to say" and GET OVER IT! When the citizens of this country stop looking for petty, time-wasting, rediculous "words" to spend their efforts on, we may actually become, once again, the great nation we used to be! I am taking up sign language...end of story! I don't need the "political correctness" police to knock on my door. I talk the way I talk and I can assure you that if I have something to say in malice...you will know beyond a shadow of a doubt that there is intent in my words, but don't go putting words in my mouth. I can do the same to almost every single person on this planet...that's what makes this whole thing so rediculous! "Don't do as I do, do as the politically correct tell you to do"!

Axe, you really need to do something about your language! There are young people reading these responses, and your comments might lead people to think you're a racist! LOL!!

For this lady to use that term even to think it is truly reprehensible. I dont hear that word used much anymore except in books or films. And she was laughing when she said it. How does one joke about that? It goes beyond racism to human rights and decency. I do believe if this lady made this comment about a white person we would not have heard much less talk about it. That would be sad.

Agreed, lynching is not a common term these days but think about where the term came from. It was not a result of "lynching" black people. It was a means of punishment by a community when there was no law. I dare say that many people, regardless of color were lynched in the past. That aside, how many people really have the ability to form a conversation in their mind, cleanse that conversation of any potential no-nos and then spout out their conversation without flaw? Mr. Al Sharpton has made some racist comments himself, I am sad to say, and he shows absolutely no remorse for his comments. Talk about malice! We are human...we make mistakes. To make such a big deal out of it is really scraping the bottom of the barrel. And, yes, if this had been said about a white person...not a single soul would have flinched! Why is anyone at all so fired up about something that the target, Tiger Woods, says is no big deal? What? He is too stupid to know what's good for him? Do we have to defend him? Sheesh!

eholder1 We all say things sometimes without thinking. We are human after all. This however is not an excuse for what she said. I believe the word lynch comes from a man W.Lynch in Virginia 1780. He was a vigilante who began to hang people. In our history many people of all races have faced a lynch mob. Can you imagine the fear they would feel knowing what was happening to them. Sometimes there was no law but sometimes there was and let it happen. It is a very dark and inhuman part of our history. She knew the meaning of the word, we all do. She would not have used it if she didnt. It does not matter if Tiger Woods says its no big deal because its about her and what she said. Maybe a major history lesson with photos of people who have been lynched would teach her about this gruesome act and to think about what she said. Im sorry if I carried on a little in this comment but it concerns me. For me its not about racism but human decency

eholder1. After I wrote my last comment and walked away from my computer I thought you might think I was preaching to you. While I did address some of your comments the rest were just my opinions not directed at you. I have made some people unhappy with me on this web site but I hope you do not become one of those. Please accept my apology.

No problem, angbar. It was a very unfortunate choice of words, without a doubt, on behalf of the anchor. But it should be over by now...it's not. I think that is where a lot of this blogging is coming from. I haven't been blogging long, so I don't know what blogs have been out here before. I just felt so strongly about Al Sharpton getting involved and keeping this whole thing slanted as a racist thing that I just had to speak. The anchor made a mistake...does it have to turn into "As The World Turns" or something? Give me a break! That's where my frustration lies...with Al Sharpton. I wish the black community would realize that he is taking us backward, not forward. Instead of progressing race relations, he is destroying them. HE should be the target of a campaign to take him out of the limelight so that we can learn to live with each other without wearing our hearts on our sleeves. I think he, and people like him, are the source of "political correctness". That's why we all have to walk on eggshells in this country and be accountable...except for he and his followers, of course!

Just so I am not misinterpreted...when I say that Al Sharpton should be targeted by a campaign to take him out of the limelight, I mean just that. I do not wish Al Sharpton any harm at all. I do not wish to see any ill will befall him. I just wish he would get out of the picture and shut up so that we can learn to live together. There is no room in race relations for a pot stirrer.
