Gas Guzzling Blues -- Douglas Chick

I have an Infiniti FX 35 that gets 18 miles a gal, and Land Rover that gets 13 miles a gal, and a Jeep Cherokee that get around 17. The Infiniti is the best of the 3 on gas, but at 18 miles a gallon, at near $4 a gallon, I may as well drive a Sherman tank.

(This sounds like a country song, doesn’t it?)

The SUV trend that saved the American Car makers is quickly sending them to the grave. Because dealers are offering little for a SUV trade in, (because they can’t get rid of them) the remaining value leaves you upside down on your car loan. This balance is then placed on top of the already over priced fuel efficient cars loan, combined, you really don’t save any money.

Will the high price of gas put the final nail in the American car maker’s coffin, or force them to be more fuel efficient?

...not withstanding, why are all the hybrids so damn ugly?

I've been pondering what to replace my aging 4-door sedan with. The hybrids are definately intriquing. But it DOES seem that the most efficient are the ugliest. There are several, though, that don't look too bad. The Camry Hybrid is one that I'm really strongly at.

My basic, limited, math skillz tells me that the Hybrid "premium" would be made up within maybe 3 years, thru tax incentives at purchase, and greater MPG. The only thing that really bothers me is what's going to happen to the battery when the 100K mile warranty expires? That's the wild card.

I haven't done the math, but I did see on the news last week that it takes about 1.5 years to recoup the premium on a Camry, and a little over two years on the Prius. When gas hits $4/gallon, the Camry changes to 9 months. That is assuming 15,000 miles/year.

I have a V10 Pickup that gets 9.5 mpg and a german SUV that gets 18. I have two trucks with older 6.9 litre diesels that get about 12 each. With older stuff, no one will give you anything for them and I DON'T want payments. I try to make every trip count and discourage the need to come back to the shop by taking everything you might need during the day. When you tow trailers and equipment, you can't buy a Prius for that.

All you have to do is change your driving style.

Inflate your tires as high as you can get them and use them to ROLL. Remove ALL extra weight in your car. Anticipate stops at lights or turns and coast up to them instead of slamming on the breaks. Drive the speed limit, and when you start off accelerate more slowly.

Basically use the engine to just get the car up to speed. You can get more fancy by putting it in neutral and/or shutting off the engine when going down hill or pulling up to a stop, but you don't have to go that far.

I have a Hummer H2. Since I changed my driving STYLE, my H2 went from 13 mpg to 20 mpg. That's right, I have a Hummer H2 that gets 20 mpg (more than any of your cars) because of driving style.

I have another 15 year old 4 cylinder car with 260,000 miles on it rated near 35 mpg. Driving style is helping me get 75 mpg now - sips gas.

What's more, the gas saving style will protect your equipment (engine and brakes) so it lasts longer too. Just make sure to leave extra time for your new driving style because it does take longer to get where you are going.
