23-year-old Marxavi Angel Martinez was living out the American dream. She married her high school sweetheart, a man she married two years. The two settled down in Graham, rented a mobile home, owned four cars, and have a 15-month-old son,

Marxavi got a job with the local library and is attending college classes, in hopes of becoming a kindergarten teacher.

But her life all changed earlier this week when Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers arrested her at her job.

She called her sister, saying she was scared and worried for her son.

Now, she sits in a jail cell awaiting hearings.

The charges are she claimed to be a US citizen and wasn't AND possessed a social security card... one legally issued, but not to her. In fact the man it belonged to is now dead.

So, what do you think should become of Marxavi?

She came to America when she was only 3. She has a child and has no memory of ever living in Mexico. In fact, she has no immediate famiy there.

Should she be sent "Home"? Where is home for her?

She knew she was not here legally. She should have made a effort to become legal

This is a sad story, and there are many folks who can share the blame for her situation.

But the ONLY course of action is to send her back to her native Mexico. To do anything otherwise would make a mockery of our laws, and only encourage more to deceive and subvert our laws.

Like Geowhit said above, she's had ample time to try and do the right thing. What about her husband, or the family that she came here with? Let's check their credentials too. Maybe then she'd have some family with her when she arrives back in Mexico.

On a side note, it looks like there may be a position opening up for a legal U.S. citizen at the Alamance Co. Library.

I hope the judge sees it in his heart to make her do the things she needs to do to make her legal! She can then take the steps to do the same for her family. The ripple effect may be that she encourages others like her to take the steps to become citizens. Hopefully she can get her job or a better job back. As money gets tight the squeeze on Illegals will get tight. This story may be the inspiration needed to encourage Illegals to take the steps needed to become legal.

Since her parents would not take the interest or time to become legal, she should have. She's had 5 years to become legal and chose not to. Send her back.

I know I'll draw some flak for this, but this peaks at 88 on my Crock-o-Meter.

She was here since 3 and had a job and apparently was contributing to the public good, her card-carrying American status notwithstanding. Yes, I can see why the Sheriff, SWAT, the Port Authority and Good Housekeeping would swoop down on her.

Yet, the quarter-billion other illegals drinking hair spray and driving on our highways without a license or insurance and raising goats in the back yard continue to breed like Mogwai.

I keep hearing (and reading) people say she should have taken the steps to becoming legal. Most often illegal immigrants don't take these steps for fear they will be sent back while awaiting citizenship. No doubt being here illegally is illegal (redundant, i know), but this is a woman who did not make the decision to come to the U.S. The decision was made for her. She was schooled in the N.C. public school system and was a taxpaying resident. It's unfortunate that a decision that was made for her is now coming back to haunt her.

If there was a system that allowed illegals with no criminal background who were brought here as children, to remain in the U.S. while they worked for citizenship, then maybe more illegals would come forward to apply to be citizens.

She may be from Mexico, but she hasn't lived there since she was 3! Why would we ship her back to a country that is foreign to her?!!

This is so unfortunate, and I hope she is allowed to stay in this country while she works toward becoming legal.

This makes me absolutely sick. Like this country has nothing else to worry about than a woman here trying to make a life for her family.... for her son. Need I remind everyone that in a way (unless you are of COMPLETE native american decent) we all came here illegally. I have known Marxavi Angel Martinez since we went to middle school together and it would br a SHAME for this country to lose a person like herself. She is one of the most wonderful and caring people I have EVER had the pleasure of knowing in my life. She works hard and plays harder. She has no criminal past, got good grades in school, was an amazing former coworker (at a business i will not disclose) and tried her hardest at everything she has ever done. Sit down and have ONE, JUST ONE conversation with this woman and you will agree with me. And as far as the laws on this subject are concerned, they are pretty screwed up anyway. We allow people to "slip through the cracks" of our judicial system every day.... we believe in second chances for people who murder or rape, or give a child drugs.... but for this, God forbid.... she needs help to become legal, not to sit in jail because HER family tried to give her a better life. And if it wasn't so difficult to become a legal citizen, then maybe more people would be motivated to do it. She speaks english and knows everything about this country that I do... since we did go to school together and all. So I think she IS a citizen... all she needs is the paper to show it. I love you girl and my thoughts and prayers are with you and your beautiful family.

This is her home she been here all her life. This is a case of government stupidity. All the crime going on in this country and this is the only arrest the government can come up with. If this country is going to punish a child for something the parent done then there should be a lot of people in jail. I see why other countries call Americans stupid. And anyone that thinks she should be deported is stupid. What really makes us Citizens is it a piece of paper or our hearts. This is just plain wrong. To upset! And who am I? I am a 47 y/o African American I served in the US army beside men and women from around the world some which lost their live to fight for a country that they though was for the people by the people the land of the free home of the brave. This Lady should be given her freedom. She has been in the US all her life. She is attending college classes, in hopes of becoming a kindergarten teacher. "Should she be sent "Home"?" Like i said this is her home. "Where is home for her?" Think about it put yourself in her shoes the only place you elver known as home the place you grew up at all you hopes and dreams your child. Now think someone come take it all away because of what?

""This is one of those cases when the information came up, it's something the county is not going to turn their head to when there's a violation of the law," said Sheriff Randy Jones."

Now that I've cooled off some and re-read Ms. Myers' story, I know that tonight the fair citizens of County Alamance can sleep peacefully now that a dangerous librarian is in custody and that their tax dollars are well-spent.

I guess this would be a bad time to let slip to Marshal Dillon Jones and his flagpole sitters that I tore the tags off my mattresses and that my inspection sticker is crooked.

I wonder how many Al-Qaida are signing up for flight lessons and how many Iranians are racking up Pell Grants at 4-year schools learning nuclear physics...

What would Jesus do?

On a side note if you are renting a trailer you have no business owning 4 cars.

Is there no compassion on Walton's Mountain?

Should those with over due libary books be sent to Mexico?

I want to know why it took 20 years to find out someone is here illegally.

Graduaded from a NC Public school. Driver's license, marriage license, gave birth to a U.S. citizen, civil service job...

Where are the checks at to balance someone who is living a lie? Everybody frets about Big Brother. Seems to me that he's asleep at the wheel.

Send her back. This person was fully aware that she was not legal , in fact it is my understanding that she had someone else's Social Security card. I bet the people who want to turn their head and ignore the facts of the law would think different if it was their Social Security number she was using. I would venture to say they would want the law enforcement folks to do their job.

It takes a concious choice to use someone else's Social Security number. Do we let a criminal off for a felony, because they turned their life around after the crime? If we let her stay, then someone else will come along with another sad, sad, story and before you know it, we'll be over run by Mexicans. Her story is indeed a sad one, but the law is the law. She knew she was breaking the law when she used the fake Social Security number. Sad as it is, we still prosecute theives.

Knowing her, i can say with every bit of integrity i have, "SHE CAN HAVE MY SS NUMBER TO USE IF SHE NEEDS IT." And as far as do we let a criminal off, WAKE UP- CRIMINALS GET LET OFF EVERY SINGLE DAY! Why do you think we have a sex offender registry knowing it has one of the highest rates of repeat offenders.

Maybe I'm wrong but I thought that if you married inside the USofA you then obtained citizen status? On the other hand, she was holding a false social security card. Lock her up for 60 days, call it news already.

Well tell me this, if you lived here all your life basically and know nothing about Mexico, what do you do when you are deported to a country you do not know. The parents are the real problem here, she is just doing what she has to do to make a living. So don't blame her. Thank ICE for getting the helpless young female criminals off the streets and doing nothing about the real criminals that get away with it every day and are not trying to do anything for their family. They will continue to sell drugs and get away with it. Maybe we should look at all librarians, they must be doing something terrible, after all they are always so quiet.

I am in total agreement with Geowhit & FarmTruk. If living & staying in the US was her dream, then she should have made every effort possible to become a US citizen. Our government is obligated to take the necessary steps to deport ALL illegal immigrants, not just a select few. Our laws need to be stricter and enforced. Why do you think that so many people want to live here? Because they believe that they can get away with criminal behavior. Comments are always made on how America was founded by immigrants. Yes this is true, but enough already....our country has changed...laws(not as strict), people, economy, more criminal behavior, and the worst of all, taking God out of our civilization! Our country needs substantial prayer.

Cook I have read that the law of the land in Jesus day was stoning for some offenses and I have read in the bible where the citizens wanted to stone this woman and Jesus told them let he without sin cast the first stone. So I don’t know if Jesus would just obey the law of the land. I say let her stay let them all stay and make them pay taxes instant tax revenue.

She has been here since she was THREE. She has worked in the library. Why didnt she become a US citizen? Honestly I dont have a problem with people becoming legal citizens. I work. Pay taxes and honor this country. If I went to her country I would have to learn her language and become a citizen. She has lived and worked here tax free enjoying liberties and freedoms and state funded education tax free. If she becomes a citizen she can stay. But for 20 yrs someone has avoided her becoming a citizen. Since she was 18yrs old she has avoided becoming a citizen. Let's guard the constitution that my grandfather lies in Arlington for. Let's honor it for the longevity of this country. Other countries mock us for how clueless we are about other countries designs on us. Goodlooking women with children strap on terrorist weapons too.

TV Reporter, NASCAR wife, Mom. From the time I was 10 years old, I knew I would become a journalist. That was when I had my first article published in the St. Petersburg Times. The story was about our class trip to the Museum of Fine Arts, but I was hooked. And I'm still a news hawk - I admit it. I feel extremely privileged to tell other people's stories. I love people, I love being out in the field interacting with people and wouldn't trade it for anything. I was born and raised in the Sunshine State. A fifth-generation Native Floridian, I graduated from Florida State University (go Seminoles!) - the same university my mom, my aunts, my cousins and even my sister attended. I am married to Danny "Chocolate" Myers. Chocolate was the gasman for the late Dale Earnhardt for nearly 20 years and still works with Richard Childress Racing, only now he's in "management". He also hosts a radio show each day from 11 to 3 on Sirius Satellite Radio Channel 128 called "Tradin' Paint." I lost a 10-year-old daughter, Brandy, to leukemia. She was sick for five years. During that time, I spent countless nights at the Ronald McDonald House and logged countless hours with her in and out of the hospital, going through bone marrow aspirates and spinal taps and finally an autologous bone marrow transplant. She was bright and beautiful and I thank God every day for the time we had together. I am also blessed to be the mother of Alexi Nichole. Alexi attends Davidson County Community College, works at the Childress Vineyards and is a "semi-professional wake-boarder!" Last year we sold our old home in Lexington and moved fulltime to the log cabin on High Rock Lake. Some of my favorite sayings are: "God is good all the time, and all the time, God is good." "The events of my life, the circumstances of my life and the people around me in my life do not MAKE me the way I am, they REVEAL the way I am." "Carpe Diem - Seize the Day" and "Here am I, Lord, send me."
