It was a horrific sight, walking into High Point Regional Health System and seeing the face of Pete Sesitito. The 76-year-old had been beaten nearly to death Tuesday by an out-of-control teenager - according to police. Police say 16-year-old Maurlon Ewing, Jr. knocked on Pete's door on Wise Avenue, a home he's lived in for decades. When Pete told the teen and his two young accomplices to go away, he says the teen busted down the door and came after Pete with a vengeance. Pete, who went through an 8-hour carry/conceal class, says he couldn't reach his pistol - so he ran to his bedroom to try and hide. The boy caught him and then began to beat him and kick him, over and over again until Pete fained death. All the while, Pete says two young children - a boy and girl ages 9 and 11, watched the bloody ordeal. And while Pete says he writhed in pain, the teen reached down and stole the watch from his wrist and his wedding band off his finger...the band given to him by his late wife. Then, the teen grabbed the keys to his 2006 Honda and left. Lucky for Pete, a local police officer was driving by and noticed the broken door. He came to Pete's aid and the elderly man was taken to the hospital with what appeared to be life-threatening injuries at the time. His son-in-law says enough is enough. Pete's home has been broken into about 10 times over the past year. Police verify that. And Pete was beaten while going to his mailbox a year-and-a-half ago, though not as severely as this time. Pete's family says they will take a loss on the home and sell it. They'll move Pete into another home, hopefully one that is in a safer neighborhood. Meanwhile, the teen who is accused of beating him sits in jail under a 100-thousand-dollar bond. The two children? Who knows. Police can'ts say. The courts won't. Pete wonders if they will go on to beat someone else, after all, he says, children learn what they live.  And his son-in-law says he finds it ironic that Pete, a decorated war hero from the Korean conflict, fought for the rights of all Americans... including the rights of this teen who nearly took his life.

I hope the sorry no-good street thug gets the full extent of the law. It is a shame and sad that a law-abiding citizen cannot be safe in their own home much less out in the open. This worthless punk deserves to be put away so he cannot do this to some other unfortunate person. How could any decent human attack an elderly person and mercilessly beat them like this poor man? The police department needs to step up and do more about the criminal behavior of todays youths and more to the point these gangs that perpetrate this kind of activity that have infiltrated our communities. I almost feel like the citizens need to organize and form a vigilante group to fight the criminal activity that is eroding our society.

The problem is, it is not the Police Dept.s that are at fault. Blame the psycologists that say that the poor troubled youth is just a victim of society, and then blame the legislators that fall for the stupid excuses and pass laws that prevent youthful offenders from being punished the way they should be.

16-year-old Maurlon Ewing, Jr. should be sentenced to being Pete's care giver for the rest of his life.

Conceal Carry is no good if you do not carry. Even in your own house

The worst thing when it was over would be the clean up and yet the best thing would be the clean up.

Why do people feel the need to respond to a knock on the door if you do not know the individuals. Instead of responding Pete should have gotten his gun. I am not saying it was Pete's fault. These boys should get more than what the law allows.

Does anyone really believe you are getting the whole story when it comes down to gang violence in the triad?

No we're not getting the full story on gangs. These towns we live in High Point,Greensboro,Colfax,Summerfield,Thomasville,Archdal
e,W.Salem,Kernersville,Oak Ridge are just like Los Angeles Ca.....We're just seperate for taxation reasons.Look around, open your eyes, the gangs have been here.Go on Sheriff B.J.'s website, look what's sitting in his jail, small jail but always overloaded.

These PUNKS will get what they deserve one of these days! The sad part is, some other kid will be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and some paranoid adult will shoot first and ask later! Take them to the streets of Iraq, and let them knock on doors!

Nope,I'm sorry. They're going nowhere. It's too late, things will only get worse.Too late and there is not a thing we can do.The police are short of manpower and lawyered to death. The jails are busting at the seams......everybody says the problem is in the home....true...but now the problem has grown up and got a gun or knife or baseball bat.

Raise the age of quitting school to age 18. Raise the level at which a child is considered an adult to age 21. Charge the parents as co-conspirators to any crimes their kids commit until age 21. Lack of two parent households, lack of corporal punishment, leads to kids not understanding the consequence of their actions. Mr Sesitito is a victim of Maurlon Ewings having recieved bad parenting. I'm 55 and in grade and high school I got hit if I acted the fool. I got hit twice as hard when I got home. Maurlon Ewing needs to be held down and beaten, as bad as he beat Mr. Sesitito. Then and only then will he understand the consequence of his actions.

Wrong. The laws on the books now can not be enforced, why make more ? I got whippings in school and another when I got home too.Held down and beaten ? There goes your life saving, job, and home because you will go to jail and feed a lawyer on the way. Then a civil suit depending how bad he says you hurt him.

Say we don't have room in our jails? Decriminalize the use of marijuana and you can take a third of the prison population out. They've "tried" to kill off its usage since the forties with absolutely no impact on usage. It goes on whether it is legal or not. Legalization and taxation would turn it into a cash crop, therefore the need to commit crimes to buy on the illegal market would diminish.

Jimbob2,

Let the beatings occur in jail. Corporal punishment until the age of 21. If the parents don't comply, charge them with his crime as well. Somebody has to take charge. This slap their wrist and give them an education doesn't work. Whip him and whip him hard.

Go on the Sheriff's website, click inmate listing. There's about 900 in those 2 jails every day.Not a whole lot in there for burning weed.Several visitors to our country are in there. On that site white is not black or African American,it can be any race.

No whipping,no beating.
If you charge the parents what will you do with them ?
There's no one to take charge and no one coming that I can see.

Jimbob2,

Prison populations which don't have the fluctuation of holding jails are filled with many "drug criminals". Instead of damning all my ideas, suggest some of your own. Telling me the "system" doesn't work, doesn't keep the Maurlon Ewings from committing crimes.

That was the thought behind my first post. The system does not work and will not work...and things will not improve....because there is no one to change it....Politicians say they will to get elected/reelected and do nothing.

DeadlineDiva,

I have a question for you and your fellow journalists and station personalities. I know it is important for you as a public figure to let your audience know as much about you as possible. Aren't you concerned about posting pictures of your family members, knowing what wackos are out there? I've seen that you cover gang violence and its victims, but it would concern me that you place yourself or the station places you into environments that aren't safe at all. I have conceal-carry and would not consider placing myself in situations that you have convered. There are plenty of us bloggers who love you folks dearly, but there are also opportunists who would take thrill in "taking out a local celebrity". There is a certain amount of anonymity in blogging, but some of you folks put in ALL too much information, per my opinion.
