In the city of Eden... in the village of Olde Leaksville... is a 36-foot mural... a painting of life on the Dan River... of batteaus and beautiful children... of men inside steering the flat-bottom boat... and a minstrel in the back of the boat.

It all sounds idyllic, after all, it IS in Eden...but not so fast.

When city officials commissioned the painting, they say their intent was to pay tribute to the captains of the batteaus. Most were freed blacks... some were former slaves... but all were productive citizens of the late 1800s.

But some don't see the beauty. In fact, a remnant of the town finds it offensive.

So now a controversy brews. One group made up of mostly blacks plans to petition the city to have it removed, while others - including the leader of the local NAACP, supports keeping the painting in place.

As in most cases, art is subject to interpretation. So what's yours?

As a black american, I do feel that the painting was racist nor offensive. I think it is a nice painting that reflects the contributions that blacks made in NC.

I meant to say not racist nor offensive.

I'm a black female and I do not find the mural to be offensive, racist, nor does it remind me of slavery. I am happy that someone came up with the notion to honor my ancestors and their contributions.

Can a mural be racist? No
I think many don't understand the word racist and therefore it is used way too much. Racist is a mindset a lifestyle or belief. The word race depending on the suffix we attach to word can be both negative and positive. Now can a mural be offensive yes. Can the artist be racist well that depends on their mindset, or their belief system and their motivation for the work? Can we practice racism well yes but there are different levels of racism, based on the power and influence one has. Now is deadlinediva a racist to deem this story worthy of the coverage it’s getting is she even the one who deemed this story news worthy? I have never met deadlinediva and have had very little interaction with her on these blogs so I’m not qualified to say whether she is racist or not, but with all that is going on in the world and around the triad I can’t see where this story is news worthy. There is much talk in this community about Sharpton and Jackson and how they stir things up and how they are the reason for hard feelings in the white community toward race relations, well this story can only fester the belief that black people constantly whine and have their feelings on their shirt sleeves. I did not find the mural offensive just for the record!

Axekick - You certainly do not know me... and if you did you'd know I am the last person on earth to have the word "racist" in the same sentence as my name. YOU have personally offended me. YOU owe ME an apology, Axekick. And if you knew anything at all about the TV news industry, you would know that I was assigned this story. So are you calling my bosses RACISTS, too. Get a clue, Bud. I think I now have a clue as to why you're named AXEKICK because obviously you've ticked somebody else off as badly as you have me. Oh, by the way, why don't you also tell my husband CHOCOLATE that I'm a racist!

I guess we are not reading the same post I said I didn't know if this story was your idea or that of your employer and I didn't call you anything! I am called axekick because I’m a two time heavy weight national kick boxing champion who has knocked out many of my opponents with my feet. If I hit a nerve ask yourself why you feel the way you do, I showed you respect nothing I said was out of line I just gave an intelligent definition of the word racist and questioned the news worthiness of the story. I owe you nothing because I did not say how you stood on the issue one way or another!

Even though Axekick you didn't specifically say that she is a racist, you sort of beated that around the bush like you do sometimes and I got the same impression that DeadlineDiva did. You have no right calling NO ONE and I mean NO ONE on here racist or anything else for that matter, because you do not know anyone on this website! Not even from your interactions with people on here gives you the right to call them names. You do owe DeadlineDiva an apology...well actually the entire Fox8 staff, for saying what you did.

Alexi, you have every reason to be proud of your mother. She is a great reporter and I can tell she is a very caring person by the way she does her reporting. Caron, I know that comment made you angry, it did me too when I read it. This may not be news worthy to some, but there are obviously people that this mural has offended, or there would not be a story. Keep up the good work!

PS,
Caron, have you had a chance to tell the NASCAR drivers "thank you" from Randy B. Hall??

Randy B. Hall - I passed on the "Thank You" to Chocolate. It should have gone out on the radio waves on my husband's national daily radio show - Tradin' Paint on Sirius 128 from 11 to 3 each day.
As for YOU KickAxe, I don't care how fast your feet are, it takes a real man to say he's sorry - that he was wrong to say what he did. I guess that's why I'm not getting an apology from you, huh?

There is nothing to apologize for in my opinion the story was not news worthy. And if not for the fact I said something it would have faded away with little or no comments. And the standard by which you gauge manhood is of no concern to me. You have a good day!

I surfed for a more detailed shot of the mural so I could make a better judgement. I wanted to see if anything unseen represented hanging or whipping or slaves in chains. I couldn’t find any unstitched close-up panorama shots of each section of the mural. I saw the story on wxii, read the Greensboro paper’s article and watched Caron Myers story.

I surfed the net for artwork by Kitty Williams and Jack Stone.

Unless the large mural has hidden scenes, Caron’s Story is very clear. The town manager and the head of the NAACP approve the mural because it represents freedom from slavery. The River was The best way to transport goods and represented freedom and jobs to Black and White men. One White man is pushing a large barrel while the Black guy carries a little bucket. For all we know the White guy playing the banjo is on break. The Black people in Caron’s interview must not be aware of what the mural really stands for.

Nothing offensive there.....like to have it in my dining room...

If the French/Black Creoles ("CAJUNS") don't find it offensive, why should anybody else? - It's their heritage, and they're generally proud of it -last time I found myself "on the Bayou", I saw quite a few "stickboats" still in use...

You need to think before you speak, Axe and Caron is right, a "real" man would say he's sorry.

Also, why isn't this story newsworthy? It is no different than any other story about something that offends a few people.

TV Reporter, NASCAR wife, Mom. From the time I was 10 years old, I knew I would become a journalist. That was when I had my first article published in the St. Petersburg Times. The story was about our class trip to the Museum of Fine Arts, but I was hooked. And I'm still a news hawk - I admit it. I feel extremely privileged to tell other people's stories. I love people, I love being out in the field interacting with people and wouldn't trade it for anything. I was born and raised in the Sunshine State. A fifth-generation Native Floridian, I graduated from Florida State University (go Seminoles!) - the same university my mom, my aunts, my cousins and even my sister attended. I am married to Danny "Chocolate" Myers. Chocolate was the gasman for the late Dale Earnhardt for nearly 20 years and still works with Richard Childress Racing, only now he's in "management". He also hosts a radio show each day from 11 to 3 on Sirius Satellite Radio Channel 128 called "Tradin' Paint." I lost a 10-year-old daughter, Brandy, to leukemia. She was sick for five years. During that time, I spent countless nights at the Ronald McDonald House and logged countless hours with her in and out of the hospital, going through bone marrow aspirates and spinal taps and finally an autologous bone marrow transplant. She was bright and beautiful and I thank God every day for the time we had together. I am also blessed to be the mother of Alexi Nichole. Alexi attends Davidson County Community College, works at the Childress Vineyards and is a "semi-professional wake-boarder!" Last year we sold our old home in Lexington and moved fulltime to the log cabin on High Rock Lake. Some of my favorite sayings are: "God is good all the time, and all the time, God is good." "The events of my life, the circumstances of my life and the people around me in my life do not MAKE me the way I am, they REVEAL the way I am." "Carpe Diem - Seize the Day" and "Here am I, Lord, send me."
