Americans are driving less... the decrease in demand has helped hold prices steady... but one group that doesn't care about supply, demand or your wallet wants its cut of the pie increased. You see, this group has no competition, responds to no market and has the power of absolute law behind them... Congress:

-------------------------------

Despite calls from the presidential campaign trail for a Memorial Day-to-Labor Day tax freeze, lawmakers quickly concluded — with a prod from the construction industry — that having $9 billion less to spend on highways could create a pre-election specter of thousands of lost jobs.

Now, lawmakers quietly are talking about raising fuel taxes by a dime from the current 18.4 cents a gallon on gasoline and 24.3 cents on diesel fuel. …

Oberstar, D-Minn., said his committee is working on the next long-term highway bill. He estimated it will take between $450 billion and $500 billion over six years to address safety and congestion issues with highways, bridges and transit systems.

“We’ll put all things on the table,” Oberstar said, but the gas tax “is the cornerstone. Nothing else will work without the underpinning of the higher user fee gas tax.”

Why don't they cut some of THEIR Retirement and Benefits? - Folks at GM and Ford, who have worked their entire adult lives there, are having their stuff cut and/ or erased after a DECADE or more of Retirement!

That's BOOLSHEET.....

I mean, it would be a sacrifice for the Greater Good, wouldn't it?

They're looking out for us, right?................

Right?

I have an idea thats thinking WAY out of the box........WHY NOT DO THIS, "dont build "it" or give "it" away unless we have "it" left over after everything else is paid!!!! Kinda like tax payers have to do with their pay checks each week/month.

Perhaps they might consider cutting some of those "overseas factfinding missions"; but I am sure that would never be considered...After all, the Governor of North Carolina would never consider such a thing; he would just raise taxes. It is an American Tradition.

Hold on, not EVERYBODY is willing to pay the federal taxes...

From The Rocky Mountain News:

The committee hosting the Democratic National Convention is using the city's gas pumps to fill up on fuel, avoiding state and federal highway taxes, officials said today.

"There's something there that just doesn't seem right to me because, in a sense, you're saying then that the officials who pass the laws are not willing to live by them, and that concerns me," Councilwoman Jeanne Faatz said.

"I am just troubled by not having the payment of taxes for what I consider to be a privately funded party, and that's what the host committee is: it's a private organization," [Faatz] said.

"The DNC is not government..." Faatz added. "They are [a] political part[y] and they are putting on a huge party, and that is not providing services to each and every citizen each day."

bleechers...

Thanks for posting that about the DNC host committee.

I think it speaks volumes of the quality and character of the Democratic party's leadership.

What's good for the goose apparently isn't so good for the gander, eh?

Oil down, dollar up... because markets work!

With the President lifting the executive order against drilling off-shore and with the surge in popular support for drilling and with the prospect of getting to US oil shale on the horizon, speculators see SUPPLY increasing, DOMESTIC PRODUCTION aiding the US economy and consequently OIL PRICES DROPPED.

This trend will only continue if the Dem leadership let these things happen. As I noted in another thread, there are enough votes in both chambers (filibuster-proof) to allow drilling, but the Dem leadership will not allow a vote.

Pelosi, Reid, Byrd and Obama don't want the will of the people and of Congress to happen because their power is linked to two prongs: a failing US economy and support from the wacko-leftist environmentalists (read: special interests).

I enjoy such diverse topics as baseball, history, politics, TV, music, cartoons, pop culture and theology. I am particularly drawn to the Revolutionary period of American history. I attended Page HS and graduated from UNCG. I have played for a number of years in the local music scene and I still record and play original music. I'm an Italian-American, bass-playing Phillies fan father of four!
