Below is a sampling of some of the issues on which Obama has changed positions since the primaries and some of the people he has discarded along the way. All but one of these (his poor grandmother) represent a move to the right (towards the center) to better position himself for the general election.

The question is, are these moves real or merely opportunistic? And if he’s moving to the right to appeal to voters, why should voters choose the “recent convert” with a track record that belies his moves?

Obviously (and sadly), I believe these are merely strategic, political calculations. No one changes his "core beliefs" (in this case, Marxist Idealism) in the space of a month.

The People

Rev. Wright (the “uncle” he could “never” disown)

Fr. Pfleger

His white grandmother (the “typical white person”)

Trinity Church

Muslim girls at a rally

Mike Klonsky (Stalinist blogger on his campaign web site)

The Issues (Reversed or Modified)

- NAFTA

- DC Gun Ban

- Pubic Campaign Financing (his “life’s work”)

- Death Penalty

- FISA

- Withdrawal from Iraq

- Funding the War

- Talks with Ahmadinejad

- A United Jerusalem as Israel’s Capital

- Fairness Doctrine

- Domestic Drilling

- Nuclear Power

Nice of you to be keeping records...the ever changing face of an ambitious politician.

When are you going to release the records of McCain's Policy Modifications. The Former Maverick has also changed his mind on many key issues including: Domestic Drilling, Public Campaign Financing, Gitmo, Terrorism, Torture, etc.

Did you even listen to the Grandmother Quote, the whole quote, or do you just get your information from Hannity? Also what choice did Wright, Flager, and Trinity Church give Obama? They knew people were watching and made the wrong choices. Before everyone was upset that he didn't leave Trinity and he didn't disown Wright. Now people are upset that he did. Make uup your minds, oh I guess that you did.

Does anyone else think that "Flip-Flop" is one of the most annoying terms in politics? It is interesting who describes the policy decisions. If it is not your guy, it is a flip-flop. If it is your guy, he rethought his position based on new information. Sadly, they both have the same information: Poll Numbers.

McCain is moving to the Right as well, but he didn't have far to go. I didn't use the phrase "flip-flop," I was commenting on his moves to the right. There was nothing derogatory stated about his moves, just that he has made them.

America is center-right. My question concerns the reliability. Obama has made fierce and unrelenting statements on many of these issues and has quickly discarded them. With the Democrats recently admitting that they over-promised in 2006, should we be weary of Obama's promises?

I'm glad he's moved to the Right. I'm happy that he sees NAFTA as positive. I'm thrilled if he's now against the DC gun band, for funding the war, for renewing FISA and for supporting Jerusalem as Isael's capital. I'm just not sure how someone can move that far in the space of weeks and be trusted to stay there.

And now a move to the Left:

"Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, who previously said the issue of gay marriage should be left up to each state, has announced his opposition to a California ballot measure that would ban same-sex marriages."

And one more to the Right:

"Reaching out to evangelical voters, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is announcing plans to expand President Bush's program steering federal social service dollars to religious groups and — in a move sure to cause controversy — support some ability to hire and fire based on faith."

He is a man who will say/do whatever it is he thinks will get him elected.

My hope is that his continued migration from the radical liberal left will so alienate his core base of extremely vocal constituents, that they "flop" away from him.

Reminds me of the old joke...

"How can you tell when a lawyer is lying?"

LOL he is not moving to the right he just wants the appearance that he is. He knows he can't get in without attracting the fringe voters.

From Joe Lieberman after Obama's speech on Iraq:

“Sen. Obama said this morning that he wants a foreign policy that is tough, smart and principled,” said Lieberman. “This afternoon I want to ask my colleague who I respect and like a couple of direct questions: Was it tough when Sen. Obama voted to order U.S. troops to retreat from Iraq on a fixed timeline regardless of the recommendations of our military commanders or conditions on the ground? Was it smart when Sen. Obama opposed the surge and predicted that it would fail to improve our security? … Was it tough and principled when Sen. Obama said he would be open to changing his plan on Iraq after going there and talking to General Petraeus, which I think was the right position, only to change that position hours later after being heatedly criticized by organizations like MoveOn.org? I say respectfully the answer to all those questions is, no.”

So much for the "no lobbyists" pledge:

From the New York Times

"[Lobbyist Steve] Farber’s vast contact list could prove crucial in raising the millions of dollars needed by the Denver host committee to showcase Senator Barack Obama and the Democratic Party in August in Denver. But Mr. Farber’s activities are a public display of how corporate connections fuel politics — exactly the type of special influence that Mr. Obama had pledged to expunge from politics when he said he would not accept donations from lobbyists."
