THESE are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives every thing its value. Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods; and it would be strange indeed if so celestial an article as FREEDOM should not be highly rated. Britain, with an army to enforce her tyranny, has declared that she has a right (not only to TAX) but "to BIND us in ALL CASES WHATSOEVER," and if being bound in that manner, is not slavery, then is there not such a thing as slavery upon earth. Even the expression is impious; for so unlimited a power can belong only to God.

Thomas Paine (The American Crisis – 1776)

Thomas Paine

When Thomas Paine wrote “The American Crisis” he saw the enemy of liberty as did all the great men of his generation: a government seizing power and conferring upon itself unlimited rights to tax and to bind. Today the word “crisis” is being used by those with quite a different view of liberty and government.

When you hear the word “crisis” attached to anything, grab your children, your property, your wallet and your freedoms for the government will soon be coming to “bind” you. We hear of the “health care crisis” and the “gas crisis” and the “environmental crisis.” All of these are followed by calls for us to abandon our lives and liberties to a central government entity.

Great Men and Women Rise Up Instead of Giving Up

Economies, societies, markets and ecology ebb and flow. Tyrants look to either an ebb or to a flow and seize upon fears to grab power. The Popes in Europe, Napoleon in France, Lenin in Russia, Mussolini in Italy, Hitler in Germany, Mao in China, Ho Chi Mihn in Vietnam, the Ayatollah in Iran… all centralized power by playing on unwarranted fears and promises of Nirvana.

American greatness has always been built upon the idea that a crisis brings out the best in the individual. Necessity drove men and women to achieve great feats of technical, philosophical or societal advancement. The threat of international tyranny called men and women to sacrifice all for the protection of liberty. Today, it is easier to sit back and cede power to politicians promising the impossible. Tough times no longer lead to greatness and independence, today they lead to cowardice and dependency.

Government Responds Only to Government

If not for Fed-Ex and UPS do any of us believe for one moment that the USPS on its own would respond to the citizenry? What if all mail delivery was nationalized. Do you believe that mail delivery would get better or worse? Cheaper or more expensive? More private or more open to government intrusion?

Already we see SUV sales down and every car maker is rushing to build and sell hybrids. The influx of Japanese cars in the 70s forced Detroit to build a better product. Quality has soared as prices have remained steady or even fallen in many areas. We must learn to trust liberty and freedom.

We face a number of crises in our day. If we lose our patience with markets and the advances that come when liberty is allowed to flourish and cede our lives over to the government, we shall have ignored the lessons of history and shall have willingly entered into slavery.

The government will not only tax all that we have at will, they shall “bind us in all cases whatsoever.”

To the above quote, well put! It is high time that we sing the song of true freedom loudly, for up till now, the citizenry have been lulled to sleep.
I would add, it is the duty of all Americans to duly look over the shoulders of our politicians, for they are our employees,an must be directed. They work for us, and if they are not working for us they must be dismissed.

When oil hits 300$ a barrel coupled with the weak dollar US industry will have to return because it will no longer be profitable for them to ship their cheap labor products back here to the land of the great consumers. So we can take government out of it because what it boils down too is money and wealth it always has, history bares witness to this fact. Every election year we talk the talk about if our elected officials do not address the concerns of the people we should replace them yet we put the same old mindset of tax cutting with increase spending right back in the White House and the congress. I say no more business as usual after McCain’s run as president I think the majority of people will be ready for real change!

If the incentive to create money and wealth is destroyed, then everything else is worthless. You cannot redistribute what is not there.

We are "great consumers" because the history of liberty in the US has led us to the great wealth and prosperity we have generally enjoyed. Your "change" seeks to destroy the engine that creates the wealth in the first place. "Great consumers" will become "dependent slaves."

You throw out the buzz words "money" and "wealth" as though they were given. Wealth is created. The government hinders liberty, hinders growth and thus hinders the creation of wealth.

You cannot "redistribute" what isn't there.

History has shown that cutting taxes eventually leads to massive increases in tax revenues. If the government was not over-committed to programs it has no authority to maintain, and would cut taxes significantly, deficits would disappear.

If you think Bush spent to much, and I certainly do, if Obama is elected, you will see such a massive power grab and a consequent explosion in spending your wallet will spin. As with all Ponzi schemes, initially there is glee at the first "return," but eventually the curtain is pulled back and the empty promises are revealed. There will be little left to "redistribute."

Yesterday I wrote and have not checked to see if it has been posted, but I am going to repeat myself.
Personally, I am scared to death the wrong PoTUS will be elected and though I will vote, I do it with very little confidence, but yet with a great hope and prayer. I am not alone in my thoughts.
Who ever is elected will certainly have their hands full as most newly elected presidents inherit policies and issues that are already in motion.
A US President truly writes his own legacy if he is so afforded a second term in office, because then and only then does he have a chance to dance to the beat of his own drum.

Juggling needs to be a presidential requirement. I am tired of smoke and mirrors. It is quite clear that Bush was unable to deal with anything, but Iraq. I am sure his daddy is proud. He ignored many other issues equally as important, such as N. Korea, Syria, Venezuela, and Iran to name a few things. Bush certainly did not ignore the rich, though did forget the middle class.
Without the middle class there is no need for the rich.
The wealthy are not the great consumers you refer to. Dependent slavery is already in place.

When written in Chinese, the word "crisis" is composed of two characters. One represents danger and the other represents opportunity.
John F. Kennedy

Our nation now has another opportunity. Certainly it is a big one, for the number of crises that we now face is great.

I'm warning you, they're coming. And this isn't conjecture based on nothing. The left in government is openly stating their intentions:

"And guess what this liberal will be all about. This liberal will be all about socializing... basically taking over and the government running all your companies." -Maxine Waters (D-CA) May 22, 2008

The best response...

"We've seen this movie before, it's called 'Hugo Chavez.'"

I enjoy such diverse topics as baseball, history, politics, TV, music, cartoons, pop culture and theology. I am particularly drawn to the Revolutionary period of American history. I attended Page HS and graduated from UNCG. I have played for a number of years in the local music scene and I still record and play original music. I'm an Italian-American, bass-playing Phillies fan father of four!
