I am a first time voter, I registered when I renewed my License recently. However I am not up to date, or really understand, the Candidates. I am an Undecided, so I could vote for either party..I just don't know which! I have heard good and bad things from a lot of people...mostly supporters bashing the others and praising their own. I am not dense, I just never got into politics. LOL

So I ask the Fox 8 veiwers to help me by, in easy to understand language and WITHOUT bashing, tell me the pros and cons of the candidates from all parties. Also, if you don't mind, who will you vote for and why??. I would like to hear some opinions of people from the state I live in.

One more thing....please do not turn this into a battle, it won't help!

Here's my short list, in alphabetical order:

Hillary Clinton
Pluses:
- Very clear vision for what she wants to do.
- Fair amount of experience (admittedly, as an observer) of the executive branch.
- Somewhat hawkish on defense.
- Likely to be as hard a worker as we've had in the job.
- Will appoint justices liberals will appreciate.
- Healthcare for everyone.

Minuses:
- Healthcare for everyone (it will be a system America very much comes to regret).
- Not hawkish enough on defense.
- Not the kind of personality that will unite the country.
- Will raise taxes, significantly and pull America back from free trade agreements.

John McCain
Pluses:
- Seems to understand the threat of radical Islam better than the others.
- Understands the stresses and demands on the military.
- The most likely of the 3 to keep government spending in check.
- Will appoint justices conservatives will appreciate.
- Middle of the road policies likely to unite the country, to some degree.

Minuses:
- He'll be 72 by the time he'd be sworn in.
- Has championed policies generally thought to be unconstitutional (McCain/Feingold).
- Not likely to expand government entitlements.
- Will continue America's free-trade agreements of the last 16 years (may hasten the loss of some jobs).

Barack Obama
Pluses:
- A personality that will go a long way to uniting the country.
- Strong character.
- Strong judgement (whether you agree with him or not) which is more important than experience.
- Not a, "Washington Insider."
- Seems to hire and appoint what he feels are the best peop

... the best people he can find, instead of people he feels he owes.
- Healthcare for everyone.

Minuses:
- Healthcare for everyone.
- Higher taxes.
- Will pull America out of trade agreements we've already signed.
- Seems a bit naive about foreign policy.
- Doesn't seem to understand that the west is in a battle with radical Islam.

There are other issues that would be pluses or minuses, depending on your point-of-view: The War on Terror and supporting/overturning Roe v. Wade, for example.

If you want more specifics on a particular item, just ask!

Cheers,
BBuckley

Both Parties' 2004 platforms are available online. There are also neutral sites outlining the candidates' positions.

I think it is only fair that anyone commenting be upfront about his/her political affiliations and preferences.

To wit, I supported Duncan Hunter and now I'm supporting Reagan's corpse. No one else left excites me. I will not presume to speak for the Democratic Party. With that said, from my perspective...

The Republican Party is made up of three basic groups: social and moral conservatives (Pro Life, Traditional marriage; strong sentencing of criminals, etc.); advocates of a strong military (national security); and those who believe that the economy is the primary concern of government.

This last group is further split into "supply-side, free market" Republicans and "balanced budget" Republicans. The first group believes that the government should essentially stay out of the way of the economy. They oppose heavy regulation and exorbitant taxation. The latter generally believe that government should be able to pay for itself, but they are not above government intervention in the economy.

Social programs should be limited to those unable to support themselves (the indigent, etc.).

Ronald Reagan was a supply sider (the term reflecting the theory that supply side of an economy drives the economy rather than the demand side).

Consumers strive to succeed when taxes are lower. Competition on the supply side is enhanced by the demand of individuals (rather than the demands of government) and the profit motive leads to advances in technology a

Consumers strive to succeed when taxes are lower. Competition on the supply side is enhanced by the demand of individuals (rather than the demands of government) and the profit motive leads to advances in technology and the availability of product to more consumers.

Taxes on business are merely taxes on individuals as companies merely pass on those costs to consumers. Greater taxation slows the flow of money through an economy and actually tends to lower government tax receipts over time.

The other side of the Republican Party is the Nixonian side. Nixon believed that the government through control of wages and prices could control things like inflation.

The Reagan side is more "free market" oriented. The other side is more inclined to use trade as a political way of accomplishing foreign and domestic goals ("protectionism"). Both parties have elements of each side (but the Republicans are generally more free market oriented).

In general, the Republican Party is for limiting legal awards, less regulation on businesses and a strict interpretation of the Constitution (i.e. "as the Founders intended").

That is a BRIEF description.

I'd be glad to clarify anything above.

:)

WOW! That is A LOT to take in! LOL
Bleechers: How does the "supplies" side effect individuals? Will this decrease prices of things? What is the trickle down effect of this?(ie Lower prices...pay cuts)
Buckely: How is heath care for everyone good and bad??
The war...I don't know what to think about that...I am somewhere between let them be, bring home our men and women...and stay to finish...what is your veiw on why it is better or worse that we are there?
Thanks guys for the info!

artbyakm2183 buckley oppinion is just that his oppinions and that and 50 cents will get you a cup of coffee in some places!

Here are the things you need to ask yourself what is important to you and your family if you are raising one and which canidate would best address the things that are important to you!

Nice blog so far and straight forward analysis by B_Buckley. Axe is also right, if you are wondering why B-Buckley thinks thse things you should probably look the issue up and decide for yourself.

One thing I will add though is that you can vote for pretty much anyone, not just the candidates included thusfar. You have the possibility of "writing in" a candidate. The problem with that is that if you do so, you'll have to be willing to live with the fact that chances are best that your write in candidate probably won't win. In that way, alot of the election process is about name recognition.

But it is still your vote. I too was going to vote for either Duncan Hunter or Fred Thompson. Both candidates withdrew from the race though. However, I could still write them in.

The "supply" side of the economy is that which produces the goods and services (and employs workers). If the individual is taxed at a lower rate and the government is not creating artificial demand through deficit spending, the "suppliers" will be encouraged to do several things:

1. Increase the quality of its goods (or services) because the money in the economy is flowing freely through the hands of millions of consumers.

2. Increase investment in profitable companies and increase investment capital in new companies.

2. Expand markets for their products and increase employment in doing so.

Products become more affordable as competition for production value increases. I recently saw an ad in a 1987 newspaper for 25" TVs... the cost was $400. Twenty years later the price for the same TV (with more options and a greater life expectancy) is far lower.

Wages increase as the demand for labor increases. Talent is rewarded as competition for competent workers becomes tighter.

The by-product of all this is an increase in government receipts (even at the lower rates). JFK knew this as did Reagan. Both were correct. Unfortunately, the government has grown faster than the increase in tax income.

Hope that helps!

"oppinions and that and 50 cents will get you a cup of coffee in some places!"

I keep on seeing or hearing people say this but I wanna know where these places are. Starbucks is up to at least $1.25 a cup now, and I doubt they would take my opnion into consideration :p

bleechers response was straight-forward also.

Also think upon this... if the government gives it to you, they can take it away. If we hand our healthcare sector over to politicians we are at their mercy.

If GM sells me a lemon or tries to rob its customers, we all have options, recourse to the courts and choices. If the government controlled the production of automobiles, we would have no recourse. We would have to take what we were given. The incentives of the free market are gone as are the protections of law.

The Constitution enumerates the powers of the federal government. The Tenth Amendment states that any power not expressly given to the federal government is reserved for the states (or for the people).

Hello!

If you haven't checked it out so far, you might visit the You Decide 2008 portion of our website. (A link is at the top of this page, in the upper right corner.)

I found the Candidate Matchmaker to be really helpful but also eye-opening.

Good luck in your quest for knowledge and thanks for doing the research.

Thanks emily, I did check it out! Funny enough it says that I only have a 2% difference between most of the candidates! (loved the bobble heads LOL) So i am still a bit stuck but gaining understanding the more I look into and thanks to the insight of others! Hopefully by election time I will have made my choice with confidence.
Thank you everyone so much for enlightening me!

I am a 25 year old stay at home mom of one very smart and active 4 year old. I have been married for 3+ years and together for 6+ years. I have lived in NC for the past 9 years. I met my husband here in NC after we both spent most of our lives in Ohio an hour apart (I 16 years in the same town and house him for 14 years I think). After spending 3 days together we both knew that we would be together for the rest of our lives... though it took us 3 years and a baby to get married! (we did not get married because of our son as a side note) My biggest dream is to become a well known artist and make a living at it. I do all kinds of art including plaster carvings, painting, scratch board, and sketching. I did not go to school for my art, I have been at it since before i can remember. I am self tought. I also do some crafts such as cross stitch and croche'. I have done work painting sets and making posters for The Staind Glass Playhouse in Winston Salem as well as some set painting in Lewisville for the West Side Civic Theatre. My husband, who is an actor, is the reason I got associated with these theatres to begin with. It is alot of work and fun but I am always glad to see winter months ahead and not just because I like the cold weather! Recently my Art activity has increased and things are looking good in the way of possibly making a living at this...slow going but you got to start somewhere! One day you may just know my name and face without having ever met me! Heck you may even buy a painting or ask me for a portrait of your family members!
