Last night I was out shopping, on my way home my husband asked me to stop and get some dinner so I stopped at the McDonald's by oak hallow mall. Everything seemed normal until I pulled around to the pay window and there was this guy sitting there completely crooked in the lane...I am not talking a little, if he had gone straight he would have pretty much hit head on to the building. His window was about 4-5 feet from the drive thru window and he was trying to talk to the guy you pay. Well I over heard the guy say "you didn't order anything" then a second later the guy in the car tried talking through his car window after he rolled it up...at this point I am thinking "WOW, somebody is out there". After I got my food I headed to the Stop light for eastchester only to discover this same guy sitting dead center of the two turning lanes there! I was even more worried when he turned the same way I was HITTING THE CURB on his way out even though he was in the middle...now I know sometimes people try to get over into the other turning lane because they got in the wrong one....but no, this was not like that, he was straight and dead center. Anyway after making the turn he was driving down the turning lanes on Eastchester! It was a God send that no one was trying to turn anywhere at that point because he road it all the way from Mickey D's to the light at Cent./circle K. I thought maybe he was going to turn and I would have been relieved if he had because there would have been fewer cars to deal with. But no, he sped up and got into the lane he was supposed to be in...finally. He was speeding from that point on, I thought I had lost sight of him and was thankful, but sure enough he was sitting at the light to go onto 311 N bond! Oh no was all I could think! When I got home (not far from there) I could hear sirens....I hope no one was hurt, i hope that it was just this nut getting pulled over....but who knows. I really wish I had the police number on hand because I would have called in a heartbeat seeing how I had his plate number and could at least tell them the color and what the car might have been. I regret not calling now, I could have called 411 and got the number I just didn't think about it...I was just to shocked at wittnessing this driver who must have been under the influence of something!

I really hate that people don't seem to care whether they drive under the influence. I have watched to many people get in the car after drinking a lot...it sickens me.  What's worse is when I try to be the voice of reason I get looked at like i am a nut! I would think that they are the crazy ones....when my husband and I go out we decide before we leave who is drinking and who is going to wait until we are safe at home if at all...it really sucks sometimes but hey I would rather be sober then dead!

I have heard multiple excuses before, one that I will never buy is when the person says "I have to get home and i have no other ride" ...well excuse me but didn't you know that BEFORE you drank anything??? Or the " I only had one!" Well if it was on an empty stomach...then it doesn't matter, you are still feeling it....even with food it can effect you especially if you are small....bottom line is don't think that you are safe just because you managed to make it home safe a couple times...drug addicts think the same way "Well I just wanted one more" before they over dose "Well I am just going to drive myself because i have done it before" says the drunk guy before he crashed and killed a child, a mother, a father or a whole family.

Wise up people! I am so sick of hearing about drunk drivers or other DUI offenders and death ...it is just STUPID! I hate to sound like one of those ads on TV, but DON"T DRINK AND DRIVE!! Everyone is at risk.....that means children too! I have a three year old son and seeing what I did last night I am glad he wasn't with me, it could have easily gone wrong. Just think about what could happen before you decide to get behind the wheel of a car....you know they have services like taxi's and actually I seen a van with a ad on it for their service as designated drivers.....so no excuses people.

You are exactly right, there is no excuse to drink or drive! One of the things that really bothers me is that the innocent person usually is the one that gets killed. Don't get me wrong, I don't wish death on anyone, but it just doesn't seem right somehow.

The police number that you needed is 911.

911 wouldn't have taken it because no one was hurt at that point and there was no accident.

If you would have called 911 and told them how he was driving, I am sure they would have dispatched an officer to the area.

I didn't know that, I thought they only responded to an immediate medical/accident/crime ect. emergencey. I can only hope that someone else thought fast enough to do such a thing. Anyway....not the point of the blog...my point was that it is stupid and irresponsible to drink and drive....that's all

You can do what I do...I have the non emergency police department, sherriff's department and Highway Patrol numbers programmed into my cell phone, just for situations like this. Unfortunately, giving them a license plate number and a direction of travel usually doesn't result in a lot. They could be driving someone else's car, therefore they wouldn't be found at the home address on the registration. They could turn off of the road you gave them, avoiding officer's who are heading that direction. If possible, I try to stay with the vehicle..at a safe distance, giving the officers time to get there. But, as the other bloggers said, with the extreme behavior of that driver, they would not have minded at all that you called it in as an emergency. It is people calling 911 for things that are far from an emergency that you should try to avoid.
For the record...a drunk driver killed my step daughter 9 years ago...and sadly enough..she was the one who was drunk and driving. It was a devistating/relieving situation for me. I was devistated to lose such a beautiful young lady that I loved as my own...but was very relieved that she did not kill someone who was innocently driving along. I wish someone had called the police on her...

I WISH THERE WAS A LAW THAT EVERYONE THAT WAS CAUGHT DUI HAD TO SPEND ONE YEAR IN THE MOURGE AND IN A TRUMA CENTER IN HOSPITALS TO SEE WHAT THESE IDOTS THAT THING THEY CAN DRINK AND DRIVE DO TO PEOPLE AND THIER FAMILY'S.AND I MEAN THE VERY FIRST TIME THEY ARE CAUGHT.THEY SHOULD BE MADE TO SEE THE BLOOD AND GUS, BROKEN BONES AND ESPECILLY THE DEAD BABYS THEY KILL.I AM SICK OF THESE PANZIE LAWYERS THAT GET THEM OFF. THEY SHOULD BE MADE TO STAND RIGHT BESIDE THE DRUNKS TO MAKE SURE THEY SEE IT ALL TOO.

I am sorry to hear about your step daughter, no matter what it is always sad when someone dies like that...or at all for that matter. My cousin died of an overdose so i understand in a way how it is to lose someone to a substance (car related or not).
Thank you for the advice, I will have to get those numbers programmed...they are good to have for many reasons including this type thing.

IB I know what you mean, I agree that first time offenders should have to be subjected to seeing the horror of it! My best friend got enough DUIs to lose her right to drive for 3 years (obviously I was not with her!) I think that seeing all that gore caused by someone drinking and driving and not just some little class would have been more benificial to her. They need a wake up call. Speaking of calls.... Here is the number of the designated driver service I seen 621-3363 I am sure if you call they will give you other locations in your area...pass it around !! Drive safely and smart please!

As I see it we are not srict enough. Many drivers who are caught DUI will continue to drive even without a license. I cannot tolerate drunk drivers. We need to get serious about this problem and that means jail time if convicted. First time or fifth time no matter! While in jail they should be made to see why they are there. Drunk driving is a crime and should be treated like the crime it is.

IB...Lord, do I agree with your statements. If they had seen what I saw when I had to go into the funeral parlor and help dress, put makeup on, and fix my dead step daughter's hair, they might think twice. The officer who worked the wreck that killed her told me he was glad we never saw pictures of her at the scene. I am glad I didn't have to see them either.

There is no excuse for someone to drink and drive in today's world. The information is out there about DD. I can't believe that one person who was sober in a club who would rather allow their friend to drive home drunk than to drive them home.

One of the new problems they are seeing in drunk driving lately is that the DD is drunk and the people who are depending on them to drive home safely are not aware of it...Scarey.

My son went to school with the boys that were killed last summer out on Joe Moore Road. Alcohol was involved. Tragic indeed, I hope that all of the kids that went out to the accident site and spray painted their thoughts on the road realized that just because they are young does not make them immortal

In 1991, I was hit from behind by a drunk driver, causing permanent injury to my neck. The D.A. told me the guy would hear the cell door slam behind him, but he wouldn't be there for long. He was under insured, and his policy did not cover the extent of my injuries. In 2006, a driver ran a stop sign, hit another vehicle, and knocked him head on into me. Broken ribs, sternum, permanent damage to both knees, and a totaled truck, that's what I got from that one. The driver was assumed to be under the influence because of the way he was driving, but they never caught him, so they don't know. The highway patrol did not investigate any further, don't believe what you see on CSI, so myself and the other innocent driver were left holding the bag with no compensation at all. (Uninsured motorist coverage does not apply if the that motorist is not caught). The legal system as a whole needs to take these offenses more seriously, and get these drivers off the roads. And the insurance industry should revise the uninsured motorist coverage to protect their clients in cases such as this. I strongly support legislation in both these areas.

I am sorry tio hear about some of you suffering injuries. We really need to crack down on these people and not let them get away with DUI again and again.

art - what's "scratch board"?

Also, glad you finally met your Husband -took awhile, didn't it? - My Wife came from Greeneville, SC to meet me on July 1, 2004 (mutual friends) - and she's still here!:-)

Scratch board is basically a board with a white coating (not really sure what it is made of) covered by black ink usually. You take a special tool and "scratch" off the black revealing the white under. IT is almost like shading in reverse...instead of putting black (or graphite) onto a white page you are taking away the black to make the highlighted part. It takes practice, but I think just about anyone who had a heart for it could do it! And yes it took some time to meet my hubby LOL...fate will always find a way!

I am a 25 year old stay at home mom of one very smart and active 4 year old. I have been married for 3+ years and together for 6+ years. I have lived in NC for the past 9 years. I met my husband here in NC after we both spent most of our lives in Ohio an hour apart (I 16 years in the same town and house him for 14 years I think). After spending 3 days together we both knew that we would be together for the rest of our lives... though it took us 3 years and a baby to get married! (we did not get married because of our son as a side note) My biggest dream is to become a well known artist and make a living at it. I do all kinds of art including plaster carvings, painting, scratch board, and sketching. I did not go to school for my art, I have been at it since before i can remember. I am self tought. I also do some crafts such as cross stitch and croche'. I have done work painting sets and making posters for The Staind Glass Playhouse in Winston Salem as well as some set painting in Lewisville for the West Side Civic Theatre. My husband, who is an actor, is the reason I got associated with these theatres to begin with. It is alot of work and fun but I am always glad to see winter months ahead and not just because I like the cold weather! Recently my Art activity has increased and things are looking good in the way of possibly making a living at this...slow going but you got to start somewhere! One day you may just know my name and face without having ever met me! Heck you may even buy a painting or ask me for a portrait of your family members!
