Last night at about 11-11:30pm I got one HECK of a surprise! I had been tracking a storm online, assuming that like many it would either die out or miss High Point my a few miles. I had been watching the lightening flicker in the window for a good while, usually in between being on the computer and painting, my husband had also told me he was getting a good light show on his way home at about 10:30pm coming from the south. Well when I seen/heard  that the storm was coming closer I shut down the computer and resorted to channel surffing....not finding anything by the way on the weather situation..so I figured it was nothing to get to worried about.

Not to long after, A HUGE bolt of lightening struck ....very VERY close it seemed! Thunder AND lightening at the same time (Always was told that means it is on top of you or something) The night was suddenly a blinding day!  I thought for sure it wouldn't be long before hearing sirens blareing because lightening had struck a home or something! Just HOW close it seemed it was. After that I REALLY searched for some news cast on the storm, wondering how bad it was going to be....the lightening was pretty bad. Finally I braved it and turned the computer back on to check...I wanted to go to bed but the weather seems to always keep me awake....and it wasn't EVEN HERE YET! I was shocked....I guess this is what they mean when they say lightening can travel ahead of the storm!  I am still wondering if it ever actually rained or the wind picked up at all or did it die out as usual before hitting high point real good?

Anyway I finally just went to bed, I don't even know if it even rained (what I did see it didn't while I had been awake and the wind was calm) But I do know that I listened to thunder for a bit after going to bed before finally getting some sleep also checking my weather bug on my cell phone one more time...but on that it didn't really look like much was left of it (I am not a weather watcher at all....nope not me...ok yeah I like weather LOL)

I have only had one other similar experience a few years back (thinking about it we are probably talking 5 years or so). I had been in my room, again doing some various artwork during a storm, when a bolt of lighten struck close by....close enough that it made the lights go out and set off my phone and a game that had been laying on a cord in my room and of course the thunder was LOUD,  causing a fit of noise and scaring the pants off me! I think back on it and still get goosebumps ...thanking God it had not been ANY closer that night!

Well I really just HAD to share my experience from last night. Was anyone else awake last night in the area (311 bypass, Gordon rd., deep river area) that saw what I did?

No, I cannot help you on "that particular bolt of lightening", but I thought I would let you know about something that my mother told me about when I returned from vacation, it was about a man in Florida who was literally hit by a bolt of lightening "from the blue", meaning there was no storm in the area and the skies were clear blue without a cloud in the sky. Yeah, I'm a "weather nut", but they said this form of lightening is more deadly than any other, it is hotter, lasts longer, etc. You can look it up on the computer, he was 41 or 42 yr. old landscaper in Dade County. I knew that lightening can "preceed a storm" (but they say there were no storms anywhere around), and regularly tell my family "if you can hear thunder, you can get struck by lightening", do they listen, NO. But this was the first time I have heard of "clear blue lightening" in a long time. Check it out, unless it will scare you. I don't like to give people things to worry about.

KInd of makes me think of being struck down by God himself! Lightening out of NOwhere! That is crazy. i have heard of "heat lightening" but as far as I know that stays in the sky above, At least last night there was a storm in the area! Oh and yeah we get out of pools etc whenever thunder can be heard, some of my family tend not to care but I sure do! I will be outside though, only on like the porch or something...love to watch a storm come in...under some kind of cover that is! Anyway thanks for the comment!

Yes, I'm guilty of staying outside to watch a storm come in (because I love it), and I know the dangers of it. But, yes, the Florida story does make you think of "God striking you dead", doesn't it? But, it's a true story, with an plausible explanation, and I feel sympathy for his family. It seems that when it comes to "lightening", you're never really safe. There was even a man in Florida killed inside a house "underconstruction" that was hit and killed by lightening, too.

artbyakm2183, I certainly heard the storm last night and witnessed the lightning and thunder that came with it! It was phenomenal!

As a reminder, the amount of lightning has nothing to do with whether or not the storm is severe, (which would trigger a severe weather "crawl" over our programming).

Every thunderstorm ALWAYS has lightning, and it always seems to hit close to someone's house!

A severe thunderstorm produces 58 mph winds (or higher), 3/4" hail (or larger) and/or a tornado.

It's very cool stuff.

Hope you have a surge protector. Wednesday night's storm took out our second one so far in three months! We have lost three in all since last summer. Seems like the lightning has gotten more frequent and more vivid/dangerous lately. Not to mention A LOT CLOSER!!! We even have our phones plugged into a surge protector. At least our tv, computer, and video equipment was saved. We were hit by lightning a couple of months ago. It sent a bolt through our workshop roof, and blew some siding off of the building too. Kinda scary when it is that close to you, although from a distance, awesomely beautiful.

cindykay, do you guys have "lightening rods" on your home and out-buildings? Sounds old-fashion, I know, but if they are grounded correctly, they can save serious damage! And yes, by all means, keep those "surge protectors"!!!

Interesting story artbyakm2183. I can’t help you with that bolt of lightening either. But I also like the weather & tracking storms online. Been doing that some earlier tonight.

seaangelrainqueen I can remember that story about the man in Florida that was hit by the bolt of lightening "from the blue".
I’ve had several close calls myself, some at sea, on lakes, in fields & buildings. The closest I ever came to being hit though was when I was wading & fishing a trout stream in the mountains, during an early spring rain. It’s usually no lighting with the rain early in the spring. But this time one big bolt came down & hit a tree about 12 yards across the stream from me. It hit with a big boom or crack of thunder like I’ve never heard before, but the only thing it did to me was I couldn’t hardly hear for a day or two. Guess I was lucky, because I was holding the perfect lighting rod in my hand, a graphite fly rod.

Whew, close call there, but then I guess we never know when lightening will strike (referring to the Florida man). Everyone knows that when you hear thunder, then lightening can travel for many, many miles. But if the sky is clear, now that is "No Warning"!!!

I know this is late in coming, but I heard on the news this morning about how someone who had been "jogging" with their iPod had been struck by lightening, fracturing their jaw, bursting their eardrums, several burns, and I don't remember all the rest. So evidently, even this can be dangerous during a storm!

About a week or so ago, me and my family were heading to Thomasville thinking we could make it back before a huge thunderstorm got to our area. Well, about halfway there, we ran out of gas. My dad waved someone down and we had to wait about ten minutes before he got back. During that time the storm started with heavy rain and hail. After three minutes of rain, a lightning bolt struck so close that it shook our car and left me deaf for a few seconds(my window was down a little bit!:D)

I know what you mean Josh, ever since I heard about the lightening from "a clear blue sky", without a storm in the area, I know that when you see a storm coming (whether you hear thunder or not), lightening will "strike"!

I am a 25 year old stay at home mom of one very smart and active 4 year old. I have been married for 3+ years and together for 6+ years. I have lived in NC for the past 9 years. I met my husband here in NC after we both spent most of our lives in Ohio an hour apart (I 16 years in the same town and house him for 14 years I think). After spending 3 days together we both knew that we would be together for the rest of our lives... though it took us 3 years and a baby to get married! (we did not get married because of our son as a side note) My biggest dream is to become a well known artist and make a living at it. I do all kinds of art including plaster carvings, painting, scratch board, and sketching. I did not go to school for my art, I have been at it since before i can remember. I am self tought. I also do some crafts such as cross stitch and croche'. I have done work painting sets and making posters for The Staind Glass Playhouse in Winston Salem as well as some set painting in Lewisville for the West Side Civic Theatre. My husband, who is an actor, is the reason I got associated with these theatres to begin with. It is alot of work and fun but I am always glad to see winter months ahead and not just because I like the cold weather! Recently my Art activity has increased and things are looking good in the way of possibly making a living at this...slow going but you got to start somewhere! One day you may just know my name and face without having ever met me! Heck you may even buy a painting or ask me for a portrait of your family members!
