I was just curious to know why The Weather channel often has a different forcast for our area then Fox 8?

I have noticed this happen over many years. My opinion is that the weather channel covers such a large viewing area that they may not pinpoint our specific locations weather. Any other insight?

The weather channels forecasts are for the most part generated from a blend of all the computer models for the area. Years ago, the Weather Channel used to put the National Weather Service forecast on the local on the 8's, but this all changed when the weather channel and NWS butted heads. So now that the Weather Channel does all the local on the 8s themselves, of course there is no way that they can sit down and look at computer models and come up with forecasts, take the time and write them up, for each of the local areas all across teh country. They just dont have the manpower and of course mainly dont have the time. Imagine how long that would take. So now, its done that way. Sometimes, its tweaked by an actual forecaster, but thats rarely done probably. But ive seen the weather channel local on the 8s say in the forecast sunny skies and it was raining outside. This was a few years ago in Chicago while I was working. So basically here, you can get a generally idea from the weather channel, but local forecasts from say FOX 8 or even the weather service, at least there is the human element looking at various models and data and generating a forecast from them, not by a computer.

tysdad and uncaatms.....

good exp. by both of you.

All meteorologist use the same models, but it is your personal understanding of the models limitations (each has different limiations for
different weather patterns) and knowlege of the local areas topography and other features that makes a difference. Also, you will notice on model driven forecast huge swings in forecast conditions every 6-12 hours. We see those swings too, but understand the reason is usuaully a bad model run. We make more slight adjustments and in turn keep to a more consistent forecast.

Emily and I actually compare our forecast to one another to make it more consistent from the stations point of view.

I'm so glad somebody asked this question! I was just getting ready to post the exact same thing but decided to read through other posts first (good thing, huh?)
I can't believe how far off The Weather Channel is! They always forcast at least 10 degrees over what Van does and he is the most accurate I've ever seen (I love him...he's my favorite!). Just yesterday they were forcasting that this weekend was going to be in the 60's! How can that be? I can't imagine what scenario they're looking at and, being a snow lover, I hope they're never right! I live in rural Denton so it's hard to get an accurate televised reading of the weather here anyway but, as I said, Van always comes the closest if not dead on!

I am a 25 year old stay at home mom of one very smart and active 4 year old. I have been married for 3+ years and together for 6+ years. I have lived in NC for the past 9 years. I met my husband here in NC after we both spent most of our lives in Ohio an hour apart (I 16 years in the same town and house him for 14 years I think). After spending 3 days together we both knew that we would be together for the rest of our lives... though it took us 3 years and a baby to get married! (we did not get married because of our son as a side note) My biggest dream is to become a well known artist and make a living at it. I do all kinds of art including plaster carvings, painting, scratch board, and sketching. I did not go to school for my art, I have been at it since before i can remember. I am self tought. I also do some crafts such as cross stitch and croche'. I have done work painting sets and making posters for The Staind Glass Playhouse in Winston Salem as well as some set painting in Lewisville for the West Side Civic Theatre. My husband, who is an actor, is the reason I got associated with these theatres to begin with. It is alot of work and fun but I am always glad to see winter months ahead and not just because I like the cold weather! Recently my Art activity has increased and things are looking good in the way of possibly making a living at this...slow going but you got to start somewhere! One day you may just know my name and face without having ever met me! Heck you may even buy a painting or ask me for a portrait of your family members!
