Right now you can own as many cats and dogs in High Point as you'd like. That could change if Councilman Mike Pugh has his way. Mr. Pugh is an animal lover and has been contacted by DOZENS of residents regarding possible cases of animal cruelty and neglect. We get the same calls at the station.

To put a stop to irresponsible owners, he says the city needs to consider a pet ordinance that would limit the number of animals per household. Now before you get all hot and bothered, understand, most of the city will be grandfathered in. No one will have to give away their beloved pets. Pugh says he doesn't want to penalize responsibe pet owners. He wants to set guidelines so that people who have more than the limit, will be subject to inspections to ensure the safety of the animals. Responsible pet owners shouldn't have a problem with this.

I have 2 cats, and a puppy. It's hard work keeping them feed and the house clean. I interviewed a gentleman today that has 20 dogs. How you take care of 20, I'll never know, because I'll never have that many animals. His dog's are causing controversy on Innes Street. Neighbors say he doesn't take good care of them. He's been cited by the city as a public nuisance for failing to dispose of the pet waste in his front yard. He doesn't breed the animals for profit. They're all strays he's taken in. I think he's doing the best he can to take care of them. However, I wouldn't want him to take care of my animals if I went out of town.

Are you pro pet or pro choice? Do you think the city should be able to tell us how many pets we can have?

I take good care of my animals. If I had 7 and the limit was 5. I'd have no problem paying for a kennel license (about $20.00 a year) and I'd welcome random inspections.

While I don't particularly like the idea of being told how many animals I could have, I am smart enough to realize that some folks wouldn't take good care of many like I do mine. I have 4 dogs, 1 cat, and 5 parakeets. If the cost were minimal, say the $20, I would be okay with that. It is because of my love for animals that make me take that position. There is nothing more irritating to me than to see people take on pets and mistreat them. They are a responsibility and require the care and devotion of their family. You don't have to own an animal, but if you do, you should be responsible. Since some can't seem to do that...a restriction would probably be the best way to proceed to ensure that people who have many are held to a standard. That does nothing, however, for the folks who have one or two and are not responsible pet owners.

How about a limit on idiot legislation?

How about we make those who constantly mistreat animals live in THEIR own filth outside in the cold and rain with no food and make them clean up after animal control raids another hole in which animals are mistreated? Maybe those degenerates and those who have degenerate leanings toward animal cruelty will think twice about animal abuse if they are mucking out a mobile home where violations took place.

Nah, let's just throw more laws at the problem. As I have said before, it's easier than catching real crooks.

If you haven't watched the raw video of the interview with the man who owns all these dogs, you have GOT to see it. He was so funny and actually correct in his statements. That last statement about how he should start feeding the "whores" made not only the reporter laugh..I was about to die! How funny!

I was listening to the man vent his frustrations. I never expected him to say he would start feeding the street walkers. I came unglued and laughed so hard all of the muscles in my back tensed up. It took me about 45 seconds to get it back together. The interview was over after that

I am an animal love and detest anyone that mistreats an animal I think the laws for mistreatment of animals should be greater and enforced. However, I am so tired of big brother telling me what I can and can't have, what I can and can't do on my own property, I could blow a gasket. Leave the animal lovers alone if they are providing a good home for the animals. According to this report, this man is not running a puppy mill ( as the case in a recent report) he is only taking care of animals that no one else wants. If the animals are healthy, LEAVE THE MAN ALONE. Some people are not competent to have one animal but don't punish the people that are.

I agree with Just Me. The dogs in that report at least had dog houses, water and all appeared to be fed. Go after the people with one or two animals that beat, starve and leave outside with no shelter. You also can have goats in High Point. They are supposed to be treated like having a dog requiring food, water and shelter. Have you ever seen a goat in a backyard with a goathouse? I have seen people tie them up to clean up their yard and think that is all needed until they die. The city needs to check out the animals that are mistreated. They need to start picking up these and the ones running loose. Drive down W. Green, the area off Enterprise and Cedrow and see all the pitiful roaming dogs.

CATCHING WILD PIGS

There was a chemistry professor in a large college that had some exchange students in the class. One day while the class was in the lab, the Prof noticed one young man, an exchange student, who kept rubbing his back and stretching as if his back hurt.

The professor asked the young man what was the matter. The student told him he had a bullet lodged in his back. He had been shot while fighting communists in his native country who were trying to overthrow his country's government and install a new communist regime.

In the midst of his story, he looked at the professor and asked a strange question. He asked:

"Do you know how to catch wild pigs?"

The professor thought it was a joke and asked for the punch line. The young man said that it was no joke.

"You catch wild pigs by finding a suitable place in the woods and putting corn on the ground. The pigs find it and begin to come everyday to eat the free corn. When they are used to coming every day, you put a fence down one side of the place where they are used to coming.

When they get used to the fence, they begin to eat the corn again and you put up another side of the fence. They get used to that and start to eat again. You continue until you have all four sides of the fence up with a gate in the last side. The pigs, which are used to the free corn, start to come through the gate to eat that free corn again.

You then slam the gate on them and catch the whole herd. Suddenly the wild pigs have lost their freedom. They run around and around inside the fence, but they are caught.

Soon they go back to eating the free corn . They are so used to it that they have forgotten how to forage in the woods for themselves, so they accept their captivity."

The young man then told the professor that is exactly what he sees happening in America The government keeps pushing us toward Communism/Socialism and keeps spreading the free corn out in the form of programs such as supplemental income, tax credit for unearned income, tax cuts, tax exemptions, tobacco subsidies, dairy subsidies, payments not to plant crops (CRP), welfare, medicine, drugs, etc. while we continually lose our freedoms, just a little at a time.

One should always remember two truths:

1) There is no such thing as a free lunch

2) and you can never hire someone to provide a service for you cheaper than you can do it yourself.

God help us when the gate slams shut!
