Thin has been in for quite some time now, but that doesn't make it right. It's no secret Hollywood starlets and the gorgeous models that grace billboards and magazine covers are airbrushed (keep in mind some are allegedly cosmetically enhanced). Society has unrealistic standards of beauty that most women (myself included) strive to achieve. The fashion industry is criticized for using stick thin models that look like they haven't eaten since the first grade. Yet, you can bet there are no candy bars back stage or a size 6.

Tyra Banks retires from modeling and gets slammed for gaining weight. She looks healthy and happy and is still the picture of beauty. It's an unfair, unrealistic standard that is distorting the self images and ideals of young women around the world. Yet does anyone applaud Britney Spears for not missing a meal? I'm not a Britney fan, but I am seeing red about all of the "bulging belly" headlines. I've seen the pictures. She looked perfectly healthy and toned to me.  Imagine the concept, you couldn't see her ribs. I'm not condoning parading around half naked for the world to see. There's no way I'd of rocked that outfit. However, I do think most women would love to wake up and have Britney's body. I'm hoping one day it'll be "sexy" to eat again. Women like Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez aren't the ideal Celebrity shapes. They're curvy and still beautiful. They eat!

I don't know if what defines beauty will ever change, but I hearby vow to never give up ice cream or pizza. Who's with me??

I am definitely with you. I am not overweight by any means but neither am I pencil thin. I eat pretty much what I want, but I exercise as well. I agree about Brittany. I thought the same thing when they were saying negative things about her weight. I don't care for her life style or the way she dresses, but she looked fine to me. It is sad that so many of our young people have eating disorders because of the demand to be pencil thin.

LOL, Axekick!

A-Rod, you hit the nail on the head. Britney looked great, in my opinion.

I marvel at the difference between how our society treats men and women. Both genders are unforgiving about the expectations of beauty for a woman. By contrast, there are a LOT men who have "let themselves go" who still rate themselves high on the hottie scale.

Even in prime time shows, the girls are kickin' while the boyfriends/husbands are goofy at best. Very curious...

I know people that can eat like a pig and lose weight. Also those that can walk past a table and their pants get tighter. Am sure you do as well.

That said I think the ones that you can tell are not skinny just cause but starve or whatever to be that way don't look one bit good.

The double standard in this country infuriates me. It's "disgusting" for a woman to gain any weight, but when men do it, it's perfectly okay. Nobody cracks on them the way they do women.

The physical appearance of most models is unrealistic and unattainable by 99.9999% of the women in the world. Why do we hold them up as some sort of standard? They are NOT healthy. They are NOT "natural."

Speaking as someone who's dealt with an eating disorder, I know what succumbing to the pressure to be unbelievably thin can do to a person. I'm lucky to even be alive today.

Try to eat right, try to exercise, try to take care of yourself. Beyond that, don't worry about it. Life's too short to spend it trying to squeeze into a size 0.

Why DO clothing manufacturers use these stringbeans to model their clothes? I don't think I have seen a runway model yet, that I thought was "sexy". Pretty in the face, sure. Sexy, no way. The clothing manufacturers must make a size small enough for their models, and then regular sizes for the sexy girls.

I'm with Zeppo Marx - in "Animal Crackers", he sings of Captain Spaulding:

"On these things, he is very strict;
He likes his women young and thick..."

This is my opinion.
I have been married for over 20 years and I just want everyone to know that I am more in love with my wife than the day I met her. She is beautiful. Every time she enters the room I am in awe and her presence takes my breath. We as men have lost sight of what is true beauty. It has nothing to do with the outer shell of the epidermis. But, true beauty is from God.
1 Corinthians 6:19 states: Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? So I am fortunate that I have been blessed with a Godly woman. The Godliness that my wife displays actually helps me to strive to be a more Godly man. This is the main problem with the whole concept of beauty and marriage. The worldly precepts are totally different from Godly precepts.
We as men have let the perceptions and notions of Hollywood shape how we view women. I say men love your wives 4ever! Take that commitment more seriously and the beauty part will not be a problem.
I might add that as a Christian I do try to take care of the human body that the Lord has given me and my wife has played a huge part in helping me to eat right and exercise.
