This is another one of those sad days. We received news early this afternoon of the murder of UNC Student Body President Eve Carson. And as we’ve scrambled to get crews to Chapel Hill and produce afternoon promotions of this story for both on-air and the website as well as prepare for our evening newscasts, I’ve had an opportunity to glance Eve Marie Carson’s biography. And I’ve been moved.

Here are some of the highlights:

-She was 22-years old.

-She was elected in February of 2007 with 55-percent of the vote in a runoff that produced a bigger student-voter turnout than previous year’s general election.

-She was a Morehead Scholar—meaning her high school academic performance was good enough to earn a free 4-year ride at UNC.

-She was a pre-med student majoring in both political science and biology.

-Among her interests—teaching and working with children. She taught science at the Frank Porter Graham Elementary School in Chapel Hill as part of a UNC program that encourages young students to learn science. She was a tutor at a middle school in Durham, and an assistant coach of “Girls on the Run of the Triangle.” That’s a character development program for young girls that uses running to teach values and self-confidence. (She was in her running shoes when she died in the middle of Davie Circle---just off  Franklin Street Wednesday morning.  I wonder if she was out running when someone killed her. I guess we’ll find out over the next few days.)

-During her sophomore year, she studied abroad in Havana, Cuba. She also spent her summers working and volunteering in Ecuador, Egypt, and Ghana,

-She grew up in Athens, Georgia, and was the student body president of her high school.

With Eve  having such strong leadership skills, you can’t help but wonder  what she would have been. What a doctor she would have been in the field of medicine which---in many ways---is in a leadership vacuum.

I hope that as this story develops over the next few days with the search for her killer, the news conferences, the vigils, the memorial services, and the funeral;  none of us will forget this bright star of a life that has been so suddenly and tragically extinguished.

So sad indeed. Sadder still is that it will happen over and over again as long as idiots have guns and as long as there are no real penalties for those who use them for evil (NRA card-carrying members, take note of how I phrased that).

Prayers to the family and friends of Eve Carson. The entire Tarheel Nation is in mourning. I hope that the people responsible for this are caught very soon and prosecuted to the highest.
Oh and flatch....well phrased.

I'm so sad for Eve's family and friends. This is a horrible tragedy and I pray that whoever is responsible for this pays. I agree that with ECUMOM that the "chamber" is a good idea. Obviously whatever we're doing now isn't enough to scare these sickos and maniacs into not not commiting these horrible crimes. May God be with everyone that knew this wonderful young lady.

With a daughter at NC State, this is so frightening. I am so saddened by the life of this wonderful young lady that was taken by a predator who has no conscience or value for human life. This killer has no place in society and benefits no one except to destroy and bring tragedy upon innocent well-meaning individuals who if given the chance might have had a very positive impact on our sick and evil infested world. I hope this cowardly murderer who stalks young women is caught and is executed and not spend the rest of his life sitting in prison at the expense of hard-working American citizens. The judicial system needs to stop making deals (plea bargains) with these guilty vermin and exterminating them, then maybe some of this senseless killing would stop. My heartfelt prayers go out to the other young lady's family found in very similar circumstances at Auburn University and to Eve's family. It is just so sad that this country has became what it is today.

I feel so sorry for the family and friends of Eve Carson. What a terrible crime. Our society has become such that murders are just second place to daily life as we know it unless it happens to someone of the moral fiber and economic status of this young lady. Think about it. How many times do you see nationwide coverage of a homicide when it occurs to a young person that has not had the same opportunities.
It begs the question, do they deserve it? That seems to be the mindset of many. Otherwise, the outrage would exist for them and the coverage would be as intense. When do we stop rationalizing these horrible crimes.
From the stories I have seen about Eve, she was a fighter for the less fortunate. Please don't allow her loss to just be all about her. It is time society says ENOUGH to ALL this senseless crime. Homicide, child molestation... it is not acceptable.

Yes, that's my real name. It's actually a common and historic Scottish name. (Try "google-ing" it and see how many results you get.) In fact, it's my understanding the first McNeill to arrive in North Carolina from Scotland was a "Neill McNeill." I'm a native Tar Heel who's spent the last 20+ years "growing up" at the same television station. I'll try to use this blog to fill you in on some of the inner-workings of local tv news. Here we go----
