Neill McNeill's Blog

I promised myself when I started this process I wouldn't get too personal with my blogs. I read a lot of news anchor blog entries from across the country, and I've found--in more cases than not---the anchors tend to reveal a little too much about their personal lives. I usually find myself asking, "okay, what's the point? Sure it's great to learn a little more about this person, but this is more than I wanted to know."

This time, however, I'm making an exception.

My sincere appreciation's going out today to members of the Fox 8 Family, Fox 8 Viewers, The Fox 8 Web Team, and the Fox 8 Blogging Community for all the thoughts, prayers, and expressions of support after the death of my father last week. Words can't express the amount of comfort and reassurance I and my family felt from the many phone calls, cards, flowers, letters, e-mails, blog entries/comments, and personal visits.

Although my dad lived in southeastern North Carolina, he had the ability to watch our newscasts. And he did so every day. The Fox 8 Family was part of his extended family, and that's another reason this kindness is so special.

Many of you who've lost a parent or other close family member know how stressful and emotionally-draining this past week has been for my family--especially with my dad's death happening during a holiday week.

Then there was the shock of it all. He died of a sudden hemorrhagic stroke (just type that into "Google" or another search engine to read more about this and the other main "type" of stroke, their causes, and their symptoms). We take comfort, however, in the fact he passed quickly, without much (if any) pain, and at home---just as he would have wanted. We also take comfort in knowing he's in a much better place!

The next few weeks and months will be difficult as we try to get my mom settled. So please keep those good thoughts and prayers coming. But again, please know how much I personally appreciate your kindness and support.

hey neill. i thought about you this weekend as i visited my father's grave. he passed in 2004 3 days before my birthday. it's still hard to believe i can't just grab the phone and call him up. and it kind of takes away from a special event or holliday when a loved one dies so close to one. it will get a little easier as time passes. thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family during this time of transition and healing.

Neill, I lost my Mom three years ago and I can honestly tell you that it will get easier but you will never quit missing the ones you have lost. May God bless and comfort your family.

Hello Neil. I am so sorry about the loss of your father. I know that you are going through a very hard time. I wanted to share somehing with you....I too lost my grandmother in May from a stroke in the cervical spine. It paralyzed her from neck down. It was a horrible 30 days to watch her slowly deteriorate. We were amazed at her strength and positive attitude throughout her sickness. She went from cooking in the kitchen to being unable to move or sit up. She went from have healthy lungs and in 30 days she is fighting for one breathe! Our whole family learned that no matter what we face on a daily basis we have the strength and faith to get through. I stopped everything in life that was keeping me so tied down to care for her. Nothing else mattered to me. After she passed I continued to not do all the things that I use to be so "busy" with and learned to focus on my family!! I hope these words of encouragement will help you some. I will continue to pray for you and your family. God Bless You. Ashley and Boys

Yes, that's my real name. It's actually a common and historic Scottish name. (Try "google-ing" it and see how many results you get.) In fact, it's my understanding the first McNeill to arrive in North Carolina from Scotland was a "Neill McNeill." I'm a native Tar Heel who's spent the last 20+ years "growing up" at the same television station. I'll try to use this blog to fill you in on some of the inner-workings of local tv news. Here we go----
