Are dogs and cats in Rockingham County being poisoned? That's the big question circulating in Mayodan. Zane and Amanda Cardwell recently watched their tenth dog die from anti-freeze poisoning. The couple says one cat also died from the poison. Plus, back in 2005 four neighboring dogs died from anti-freeze within just a few days of each other. The Cardwell's believe someone is intentionally poisoning the animals.

The Reidsville Veterinary Hospital says they see about five to ten pets suffering from anti-freeze poisoning each year. They've seen cases where pet owners have found out of the ordinary food in their yards. Vets believe the "people food" was used to lure the animal to anti-freeze. Anti-freeze tastes sweet to animals, therefore they will drink it over water.

The Rockingham County Sheriff's Department is investigating the possible pet poisoning.

Sheesh, I guess some one just can't get up the nerve to tell their neighbors to keep their pets IN THEIR OWN YARD, so they kill them???

Didn't the lady in this story say that the dog was used to going where ever it wanted?

We had a dog that died like back in 2002. Back then I lived in Goldsboro. After she was poisoned, she had seizures like a pregnant woman has contractions. We had to euphemize her. She was like family. It was horrible. She was a very good dog too... The puppy on my photos is the first dog I have gotten sense then. I named her after my slain dog Lady. Because of what happened, she is going to be an indoor dog.

I don't think anyone should poison animals with antifreeze. However, this could have been prevented if she had contained her animals to her property. I have animals and love them as much as any pet owner, but I also respect my neighbors and keep my pets in my yard.

Out here, we used to know everybody's dog (and cat) by name.....we usually fed whoever was there.....pets MUST be kept SAFE by their owners nowadays, and it's not really too much to ask to keep your dog out of the neighbor's chickens, but they don't need to be poisoned.....that's indiscriminant, and kills alot of the natural wildlife.....I didn't shoot YOUR dog when he somehow decided the wiring in my boat looked tasty (for some strange reason).......

When people learn to keep their animals in their own yards, this won't happen. I don't agree with hurting any animals, but if you want to ensure the safety of your animals, keep them in your yard/house. Others don't like your animals near as much as you do.

All this sounds good. Unfortunately there are very cruel, mean people out there. Animals have been poisoned in their very own fenced in back yards. My animals stay inside until we are home. I regulary check the yard as well. I am very thankful for good, kind neighbors. Typically the stories aabout harmed animals were in and on their own property.
