Normally a seven hour stake out in the cramped back seat of an SUV would not sound like a great way to spend my day. However, watching and waiting for women to go into a hotel room set up for a prostitution sting proved to be surprisingly entertaining.

My photographer and I started out our shift by meeting with some of Guilford County's finest undercover officers at 1pm. We attended their briefing for the day's prostitute sting so we would understand everything going on. From undercover officers guarding each entrance to the parking lot, to multiple rooms with undercover officers watching and waiting....these guys were ready for anything. Officers set up the hotel room with video and audio monitors, although, nothing inside the hotel room is recorded. Sometimes the undercover officer has to take clothes his clothes off to prove he is not a cop. In order to protect the officer's privacy the interaction is not recorded so the officer will not be "exposed" in court.

Detective Leonard Stump started his preparation for the sting over a month ago. Detective Stump started e-mailing women who post themselves on Eros.com, Hotlocalescorts.com and Craigslist.com. Out of more than 30 women contacted by undercover officers, four showed up the day of the bust.

By 3:30m the days first target walked through the hotel doors. Once each woman enters the hotel room the work is in the hands of one undercover officer. Posing as a traveling business man, he must get the girl to offer money for sex and set a price. The undercover officer can not do this for her or prosecutors will not have a case. Detectives say three out of four women who arrived at the hotel set a price for sex within minutes. One walked away with $500 of Guilford County money. The undercover officer talked and watched that woman strip for 25 minutes trying to get her set a price. She never did, and therefore did not commit a crime. Police say she is very street savvy and has probably been busted before.

Our work continued until 1am. It was a long day but well worth it. What surprised me the most was how these women looked...normal. Each woman had her own personal safety precautions( sort of.) One called her sister once she arrived safely inside the hotel room, another called her husband. One woman ran and hid her face from our cameras told the undercover officer she is a mother of five. She looked like a mom, driving a mini-van, dressed like she was going to the grocery store...not a hotel room.

All in all detectives say it was successful day. Three women left the hotel with misdemeanor tickets for prostitution. Sheriff B.J. Barnes says all he wants to do with these type of stings is send a message. There are 365 days in the year and dozens of hotels across Guilford County and undercover officers could be waiting inside any one of them.

This is very sad. Maybe some of these women actually enjoy this, but I bet some of them do it because they feel there isn't another way to make the money they need. Like the mother of 5 for instance. I like you as a reporter, but I found it sad that you thought this was entertaining.

HSM, I wouldn't "fault" Ms. Leah for what she did or how she looked back on it. Like 1000s of other reporters, she knows that people in general love this lurid stuff and it gets and keeps viewers.

It's how the news works anymore. If they ran stories like, "A jet landed safely at PTI today and no one was killed" they'd lose a group of viewers and ad revenue, etc.

Leah was just doing what the industry expects. Earlier this year, another of the Fox8 staff reminded me of the de facto broadcast news credo - "If it bleeds, it leads."

I didn't say it was wrong to report about it flatch, it just surprised me that she thought it was entertaining. I didn't mean any disrespect, I just thought it sad that she was entertained by it. I wasn't there, so I guess I don't know.

HSM, it's sad all around. So many things have degraded along with the universe in general; therefore, the media has the duty to tell us all about its slow death within limits that grow wider as the world spirals into the commode.

It seems to me that with armed robbery and murder is at an all time high around here that the cities resources could be used on more violent crimes, like the drug problem...especially in the Minority Community. You[blogger] should not judge these ladies either, you may have done the same thing in the past and just didn't get caught. Or who knows...you may have to do it in the future... Alot of you so-called "Christians" Prostitute yourselves everyday and i could could care less who this offends...Lol..... Have a Wonderfull Day

wonder how many homes and businesses were robbed while these "officers" "worked" this entertaining sting.

I bet quite a few, unfortunately I'll also bet that a pathetic minority of those crimes will actually be solved.

Too bad it's easier and more entertaining to go after internet prostitutes than it is to solve a real crime.

Wanderer, no one's judging; we're just pointing out facts.

BTW, if you ever saw me, you'd know I'd never make a dime if I were to sell some of "that thang" and I don't do any illegal chemicals.

Recently There was a girl murdered in Greensboro, Her name was Tiffany Knight. She was one of these "escorts" she listed her services on Craigslist and now she is dead and her Daughter is missing her Mom. The money spent on hoars could be spent on ther family. Instead of giving it to girls who are to lazy to get a real job and take responsibilty for there lives. Many are drug addicts

any proof the murder in Greensboro was related to escorting or craigslist?

This is the first time i've seen any mention of that connection, looks like you're pretty familiar with the case jtodd

I knew some of her friends and they told me about her page and I looked it up.

still doesn't mean it was any way related to her escorting or craigslist

any murder is a bad deal, thankfully apparently hers was solved

what is really a shame are the other crimes that go unsolved while officers are "working" escort stings

IF you do away with Crimes like escorts the drug crime will go down also. Drug crime goes down other crimes go down.

sure, the war on drugs has been going on for how many years??

prostitution has been illegal for how many centuries??

yeah, outlawing them and spending gazillions of taxpayer dollars and resources on going after consensual activities has worked wonderfully in the past

it's way past time that we re-prioritize and focus on real crimes with real victims instead of what people do consentually

It sure doesnt hurt to get rid of it.

I feel the need to clarify. The part I found “entertaining” about this sting was the extremely choreographed way undercover officers go about putting all their pieces into place. The way it seemed so easy to make a call and have a woman show up less than an hour later. The way all of this took place without the hotel even knowing. I found of all of this fascinating. I agree, the situation itself is sad. We have video of one of these women inside the hotel we didn’t show for legal reasons, and I for one have not watched the video because it was that sad.

Thanks for clarifying that. Like I said, I think you are a good reporter. I know this type of thing needs to be reported, but I didn't understand how you thought it was entertaining. Keep up the good work.

Can someone explain to me why voluntary transactions between consenting adults need to be policed? much less reported?

Just because you don't agree with the activity they have consented to participate in?

Ms. Beno, how about doing a report on why Guilford Co. only recovered 22% and 17% of stolen property during 05 and 06. If you take motor vehicles out of the equation, which probably were abonded rather than actually recovered via detective work those same percentages drop to less than 6%.

Let me repeat that, less than 6%, in other words almost 95% of the stolen property in Guilford Co. during 05 and 06 WAS NOT recovered. umm, priorities anyone??

The city of Greensboro recovered 35% and 33% for 05 and 06 respectively, but once again taking motor vehicles out of the equation and they recovered 4% each year. At best 2/3 of the property stolen WAS NOT recovered, at worst 95% WAS NOT recovered.

those statistics available via the NC Crime Statistics website http://sbi2.jus.state.nc.us/crp/public/Default.htm

Maybe the officers could make a little more effort choreographing some property recovery, kinda doubt they will though. It's a whole lot easier to surf the web and make phone calls for a business transaction than to do real investigations and catch real criminals.

Somehow I doubt we'll see any reporting on those pathetic percentages, I guess that's not entertaining enough to bump coverage of Britany Spears latest antics or who wore what to the Oscars, or whether or not the writers strike has ended.

No, they don't record it just in case one of the officers decides to perform a sex act with the woman. Police officers routinely have sex with or masterbate to, the woman who shows up and they never get caught because nothing is recorded. His word against hers. Two wrongs don't make a right. She shouldn't be doing that, and he shouldn't be abusing the badge.

Too many police officers abuse their power, and I for one am sick of it. Thank god they fired the one in Tennessee who slept with a porn star in exchange for not giving her a speeding ticket or arresting her for possession of drugs.

It should be MANDATORY that they RECORD EVERYTHING. If they're worried about the officer's privacy, they should do what cable tv does, and use the blur feature.

Again to clarify, every move the woman makes and the officer makes is monitored by other officers in a nearby room. So, it's not one officer's word against hers, it's about 12 officer's words against hers. Plus, I can't be certain, but I believe video that has been edited in anyway can be easily disputed in court.
