I have noticed recently, since the gas prices have gone out of sight, the oil companies have been placing ads on TV about the money that have spent on alternative energy.  Do they really think that we are stupid enough to believe that they are really interested in finding alternative energy.  I have no doubt that they are spending money on these programs but I do not believe it is for the benefit of this country.  Think about it, everything they develope, they patent it.  Once they have the patent, it is gone forever.  Even if some average Joe in his backyard shop developes a new way of powering a car, power plant, etc., chances are the oil companies have already developed it and have it stuck in a closet somewhere so when Joe tries to market his idea, he is guilty of patent infringement.  I remember back in the mid 1970s a couple of car enthusiasts developed something for cars that would increase gas mileage to 70+ MPG.  As this invention was getting closer to being patented, it was reported on almost daily by radio station WBT in Charlotte.  They would talk to the inventors on the air almost daily and they admitted that the oil companies were trying to buy the patent, but, they would not sell out.  What happended?  The oil companies got to them and suddenly the new invention disappeared.  Phone calls were not returned and we are still driving cars that get less that 35 MPG.  I know that the oil companies are in the business for the money and I know that, percentage wise, they are not making any more per gallon that they were 30 years ago.  However, if we really expect or have hope that this country will find an alternative energy source, we have got to have the oil companies out of the invention business.

You DO realize that the oil companies are PUBLICLY OWNED corporations, don't you?

What that means is they serve to make a profit. That profit is for the benefit of it's shareholders. It's shareholders are comprised of regular folks, just like you and I.

Best advice I can give you is to stop whining, buy some energy stocks, and be glad we don't have to pay $6-7/gal like our friend in Europe do.

Cheap oil is not a right.

You know...I think it is high time we stop whining and do something about it. Has anyone ever noticed that when the price of a barrel of oil goes up, the prices at the pump reflect it the next day? Has anyone also noticed that when the price of a barrel of oil goes down that the lower price is not reflected at the pump for weeks, even months? Are the oil companies going to tell me that they can refine their oil overnight to get the higher price because they paid more to buy it yesterday but they cannot refine it quickly enough when the price is cheaper to reflect it at the pump the next day? That truly says we are idiots! Capitalism or not...we are stupid to let them get away with that. Stockholders or not, oil companies enjoy the highest returns on their investments than any other business out there. When are we going to wake up, people?

FarmTruk, I wasn't whinning. I was just making a statement so the oil companies can stop spending their money for those stupid ads because we are not falling for it. I am well aware that the oil companies are public companies and that they are there to make a profit but if they keep raising the prices, their profits are going down the drain because this country will go into a serious depression. As it is, everything we buy, necessities, not luxuries, are going up. for example, Coke, 2 litre, has gone from .99 to $1.25+. This is a small item but everything else has gone up in the same manner. Greed will be their downfall, the problem is, it will be the downfall of this country also.

I have been married for 30 years and have two sons of my own as well as a step son and two step daughters. We have several grandchildren and each one is a light in our lives. I am retired from a state agency (early retirement) and currently drive a truck for a local company. In my spare time, I enjoy doing some woodworking in the small shop that I have at my home and my children and grandchildren have all benefited from my hobby.
