My new weekend pasttime is visiting the Piedmont Triad Farmer's Market.  It's easy to get lost in all the different produce on display.  I didn't know there were so many different varieties of tomatoes!   Silver King and Silver Queen corn, what's the difference?  Melons, blackberries, flowers and herbs... the list goes on and on.  Plus, the prices can't be beat!

What I like most about buying farm fresh produce is knowing that I'm supporting our local farmers.  That inspired me to focus on a movement called Slow Food for an Inspired Living segment.  Essentially, Slow Food is a concept that promotes local products and supports area farmers.

Not only are individuals supporting the idea, businesses are taking part.  Check out my TV story entitled "Slow Food."  In the piece, I was fortunate to interview Brad Semon, the new owner of Revival Grill in Greensboro, and its chef, Bryan Long.  While they say it's almost impossible to use 100% local ingredients in all their dishes, they do try.

Several restaurants are embracing the Slow Food Movement.  For more details on Slow Food and a list of restaurants taking part,  check out:  www.slowfoodpiedmont.org

Happy eating!

Julie, I was reading your bio and you look lovely with or without your glasses and I've never noticed your hair being frizzy. I don't know what you do, but you do it right. You do a really good job. Keep up the good work. I enjoy watching you and the gang every day. You are like members of the family. I especially love Cindy. She is adorable.

Julie, for some reason, I seem to remember that you once worked at a station in San Francisco, CA, (I'm sure with my memory that I could be wrong). If you did, I'll bet the Farmer's Market reminds you of the street vendors and open air markets there, too. Yes, we should all try to support our local farmers, because the BEST produce is FRESH LOCAL produce!!! (And please, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't "Silver Queen" corn "sweeter tasting" that "Silver King" corn?) I hope you enjoy melons, because the cantaloupe grown around here is "out of this world". There is a place just across the NC/VA state line called Turbeville that has a cantaloupe festival every year! UMMMMM!!!! Hope you have the chance to try it (the town is between Danville and South Boston, VA on HWY 58E). Keep up the great work, your a beautiful young lady who does impeccable work! You are a great part of the Fox8 Team!!!

I loved your story on slow food and thank you for mentioning the farmers' market. I love the flowers out there and fried apple pies!

Also, I think that Green Valley Grill also uses some locally grown foods on their menu. I'd love to see a list of restaurants in the area who support local growers. It would be good to give them our support!

Thanks for the terrific story!

Fresh tomato sandwiches, grilled corn on the cob, and steamed green beans make up my ideal summer supper. You think there are lots of varieties of tomatoes, wait another month and see how many varieties of apples there are, and you can taste all of them. I also like the organic butter from the Amish farm, it is in the enclosed building, last stall on the right I believe. Great story Julie, thanks!

Fresh tomato sandwiches, grilled corn on the cob, and steamed green beans are my favorite summertime meal. I grow my own tomatoes, but buy the corn and beans at the Farmers Market. You think there are several varieties of tomatoes, wait until next month when the apples start showing up. I also the organic butter from the Amish farm, could be my imagination, but it just tastes better.

This may end up as a double post, I shut down the page when the content message popped up the first time I wrote a response. Feel free to delete one of them if I did double up.

I know I risk harrassment or stalking charges by posting here, but I would like to offer a suggestion to help. I am only interested in your success.

The best way to succeed on this blog is if you comment on other people's blogs between your own postings (it helps people get to know you). You could post controversial topics, but that isn't your nature because you are a lush sweetheart. Me, I'm a fighter, not a lover.

Anyway, it was a good piece on the Farmer's Market. It seems like a fun place, but I wouldn't know how to fix much of the stuff I could buy there. There are lots of things I don't do well, and cooking is one of them. Nothing beats fresh vegetables and food though.

One of the bartenders at the Revival Grill grew up with me and was in all my classes since we were 5 or so (he's a Carolina guy). He makes the best martinis there.

Keep up the good work. I wish I could help you more, but I don't want to get in trouble. You've done great everywhere you've been so far as I can see. Good luck and stay sweet. Let me know if I can do anything for you as a friend.

Your right, Thacker, Harassment! LOL!!! No, I had to reply to the "homegrown tomatoes"!!! When they start ripening, "plain old tomato sandwiches" are GREAT!!! We've been lucky enough that we have some family that has kept us supplied with tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers! It's never better than fresh!!! (And, that's what you're being Thacker, LOL!! No, really Julie, he's a great guy!)

I was just in for my yearly check-up...after a decade :). I mentioned to my doctor that I am trying to eat as well as possible. His recommendation was to go to the Farmer's Market where the food is local and thus has not been sitting on a truck for days and does not have the preservatives and other chemicals. I wonder if he watches Fox 8? Of course he does! :)

I am "lucky" to work with the most respected names in television news in the Piedmont, such as veterans Neill McNeill, Van Denton and Rich Brenner. As co-anchor of the FOX 8 5:00, 6:00 and 10:00 Newscasts, our job is to inform you with the news you need to know and what interests you most. Many of our stories come from your ideas. We are here to help so I encourage you to give your feedback. Setting the formalities aside, I'm originally from "The O.C." in California. After working as Anchor/Reporter in five TV stations across the country in the past decade, it's relieving to settle in the beautiful and lush North Carolina. If I'm not exploring the area, you can find me trying new restaurants or jogging with my barky, but loveable dog. During my downtime, I continue to search for a remedy to de-frizz my hair caused by the humidity, shop for television clothes that are not my favorite basic (but boring) black, and decide whether or not to wear my glasses.
