GREENSBORO – On the eve of Tuesday’s election, the black members of the Guilford County Board of Education are asking voters to oppose the $457 million in school bonds.

Deena Hayes, a school board member, cited the poor academic performance of black students and the low participation rates of black contractors in past construction bonds as the reasons for their opposition.

"We believe that it is imperative that this community hold this district accountable to our children and remove barriers to equitable access to a quality education," Hayes said at a Monday news conference. "Due to the deplorable educational outcomes of African American students and the unacceptable participation rate of our African American contractors, we will not be supporting the Guilford County school bond."

Amos Quick, another board member, attended the conference along with 11 other contractors and concerned citizens. Walter Childs, the school board’s third black member, was unable to attend because of a previous commitment.

Other groups with membership from the black community have announced their opposition of the bonds, which are expected to build or renovate 18 schools. Those groups include the Black Contractors Guild of Greensboro, Undoing Racism in Guilford County and the George Simkins PAC.

I am glad they oppose the bonds. It is sad they do it for some of the reasons they state. This just further goes to show additional problems we have within our Guilford County School Board.

These board members need to explain why they should not be removed from their seat on the board.  I wonder if they would understand  a class action reverse racism law suite since they are clearly not representing all of the students of all colors.

Any attorneys available to take this cause?

Interesting point Hank, it just goes to show how bad our elected and appointed officials are. It seems that once they get into that seat of power their own views and agendas are all that become important, not those of "We the People" the ones they are supposed to be representing. It also ticks me off that all of the lobbyists with money seem to get what is best for them rather than what is best for all. I like to use ethanol for an example. Ethanol can be made from any cellulose plant matter, Switchgrass yields a lot more ethanol than corn and does not affect the food vs. fuel issue because we don't use Switchgrass for food stuffs. The corn lobbyists get in there and the next thing you know some legislation says all ethanol must use corn to get this exemption or rebate or whatever and a bushel of corn skyrockets and all the farmers want to grow this hot new money maker, even though it is a loser in energy return. What a waste!

Being a Davidson Co. resident, I don't have a dog in this fight.

But it seems to simply be another case of "throwing the baby out with the bathwater". And from what I understand, that's just about par for the course in Guilford Co.

gadget Things do tend to change when entering politics. Ethanol is a great example. As FarmTruk said the baby was certainly tossed out with the bathwater and so were we the people.

This protest by these school board members without a doubt has underlying causes and is driven by much of the same, but I am going to stick with what I believe and know for fact rather than what I might assume.
All board members should be concerned about the kids, the students, the children that want to learn and those that do not wish to learn in a public school system. They should be concerned about those that drop out and those that are trouble makers. They should be concerned about ALL of them and not just those of one race. I do not care if the kids are orange with green dots, the care for them to achieve should be no less.
These board members have reports on reports as to who excels and who does not. They understand to the point of confusion because of all the reports, as to how the race, sex, age, class, along with many other variables come into play when a student fails to live up to his/her potential. They know what teachers are worth their salt and which are not. My point is that this reasoning they used to oppose these bonds is absurd. It has to do with many other factors. It has to do with the number of parents in the household, with the parent/s work times, with who the children hang out with at school and after school, it has to do with habits of the kids, and it has to do with the parents for they have to care and push and push some more. In many cases it has to do with so

In many cases it has to do with socioeconomic status. It has to do with gangs, drugs, sex, and alcohol. It has to do with the individuals desire to excel and better themselves. It has to do with teachers that can teach and educate by knowing how to identify with these kids. I will grant you that in many cases some kids are more affected by this status, than others, but I can assure you this is not a one-color problem as portrayed.

I oppose the bonds, but for different reasons that I have stated on another blog.
The narrow views demonstrated by these board members dictates they should be removed from their seat on the Guilford County School Board and replaced with members that would be responsible to the students, parents and citizens of Guilford County.

Someone needs to explain... exactly... how is it the school system's fault that a certain group performs at a lower level?

cook How R U doing? Missed conversing with you.

bleechers I had missed your post from March but you nailed it. The bottom line is that living anything brings on understanding. Yep you are so right! I have copied some of what you said because I fear some will not take the time to go and find your post.

I encourage the complete reading of what bleechers wrote

…“I want to be very careful not to appear as though I am telling other cultures exactly how they should attack their own problems and image, but one thing I know (and this is what Joe Petrosino knew), the solution can only come when honorable and patriotic Americans decide that curing the diseases that infect their own culture is more important than defending the worst of the worst because of some skewed notion of "unity."

Each Community Must Find Its Own Answers

I don't have the particulars or all the answers for you. Some cultures have a much harsher history of oppression than the southern Italians had. My father used to tell me that a second generation Italian-American could get a haircut, buy a new suit, get an education and blend in with the rest of the greater society. But Americans of African descent couldn't use that strategy. A haircut, a new suit and a large vocabulary do not alter the color of your skin.

Thankfully, we live in a day where the content of one's character is more often than not trumping the color of one's skin. But the change in attitudes isn't universal yet and it hasn't helped everyone; the prison rates among young African-American males remains frightfully high. I don't pr

I don't pretend to have the answers, but Joe Petrosino taught me this much, whatever the answers may be, they must be found within each community.

The first step for any culture, stop glorifying your worst members.

I don't mind the mockery of the mob stereotype on shows like The Simpsons. I am a big fan of Chico Marx too. Just like any other aspect of US history and culture, some good-natured satire can be very funny. But the glorification of organized crime or any implication that all Italian-Americans are somehow potential mobsters should not be tolerated by Americans of Italian descent.

Hopefully other cultures will be smart enough to stop glorifying the worst members of their communities. Until then, I'll keep tallking about Joe Petrosino even as The Sopranos garners more Emmy nominations and spreads into syndication.

Hating elements of your own culture can sometimes be a marvelous thing.”

I would like to add some thoughts. Positions in the spotlight that allow one to affect and effect change can be very powerful and persuasive seats and they should not be taken lightly. They should be used in a manner consistent with the expectance of positive change not only for the good of your community, but also for the good of all men.

Somebody, anybody, explain to me how it is the schools fault if african american students do not succeed as well as white or other students. They are in the same class, they hear the same teacher say the same thing, they have the same books to study and class and free time are equal. The problem is not with the school, but with the student and the parents for not pushing their child to do better. I will admit that there are some bad teachers that should be fired but these teachers are failing all of the students that they teach, not just african american, white, hispanic, etc. The bad teachers fail them all.

HankH, you don't understand the rules of politics (actually, you probably do!)... certain people are allowed to make accusations without evidence and define everything by race and certain other people who won't do that are simply accused of, well, making accusations without evidence and defining everything by race.

PS: Thanks for posting some of my blog entry. Maybe it was too long for this site to be featured, but I probably put more time into that one than any of the others!

I voted no on the bonds I was going to vote no even before Deena who I know very well and who I respect as well, mentioned the fact that the tax payers should not pay for this. Now the interesting thing is Hank you said you didn't want the bonds to pass now you want a class action law suit and you want these board members to step down, I thought you good right wing conservatives were against frivolous law suits. I love the way you people look to me and wait for my opinion on a variety of matters it gives me a warm feeling inside it makes me feel wanted I want to thank you for your support. God bless you all and God bless North Carolina for Supporting Barack Hussein Obama.

By the way I took my children out of public schools! But I also had two children to come out of public schools and one is finishing his first year of college and the other has his degree and is making his mark in the world. My family is tearing down the stereotypes of the typical black family and we are doing it without putting white folks on a pedestal! I know you hate it but I want you to understand that white folks are not my priority and I teach my children to do for self, I live the black liberation mindset that Reverend Wright talks about and I love it and I am training my children to have my mindset, don’t you dare beg someone for something you can go out and make for yourself. You all have a great election night!

I am also raising my kids without putting "white folks" on a pedestal. Neither are "white folks" my priority (whatever that means).

I want my kids to have people with values as their friends. I teach them to admire people with values (regardless of the melanin content of their skin). Many people of many different melanin levels have overcome many obstacles. My heroes are simply "human heroes."

Being a Democrat,( at least until I change parties this year), I voted NO PREFERENCE for the top office! I would rather waste my vote than vote for either candidate on the ballot! Never have I heard more B.S. and lies than this election. I also voted no on all the bonds, except the one for the new jail. It is the one thing I believe we truly need. I could care less about the money for school improvements. It's coming out of our pockets anyway! LOL!!
