I am in Winston and we have over an inch of snow here. It started about 7pm and the flakes are as big as quarters at times. Everything is white and doesn't seem to be letting up. I am off Reynolda Road. With the temps getting to 26 tonight, I forsee some school delays in the morning, because the roads are white and wet...By the way...this morning on the news it mentioned NOTHING about snow tonight. What sucks is you watch the weather to plan your day, then all of a sudden..within a few hours..everything changes completely!! I don't think there was ever more inaccuracy with the weather before as there has been since the computer models have taken over! It seems everytime I watch the weather in the morning, by noon it is totally different...FRUSTRATING!

Ladyred2007,
We understand your frustration! Man do we feel it too. In both situations.. be it calling for snow and it be a bust, or calling for the possibility of flurries, and bang, 2 hours later you have 3 inches. So now we must look at what happened to cause this? why did it snow so hard, so quickly? Why weren't these amounts forecasted? Im going to try and sum this up as basic as i can, ill try not to use fancy weather terms LOL very tough sometimes though

1. We had 2 areas of low pressure, one in the upper levels.
2. The surface area of low pressure developed a bit further West than was expected, This fed more atlantic mouisture into the area of the upper level low that gave us our snow, That is what caused it to snow heavier!
3. Why wasnt this forecasted to be heavier. Well as with any low pressure system, it causes lift, which causes precip. Now we did know that some lift was coming through.. but, our winds were expected to be out of the West, When you have a west wind it tends to dry the atmosphere out, in turn killing any precip chances.
4. The precip developed further west than was expected, This came down to 30-40 miles of diffrence in where the mix was forecasted to fall. Any other questions.. please just ask! we will be glad to answer them

In other words, that is why it is called "weather predictions" and "weather forecasting", because THIS IS NOT AN EXACT SCIENCE!!! Unless you have a direct line to our higher power, then you will have to rely on human's to predict what the weather will be. They will do the best they can, but NO ONE IS PERFECT!!! But, we still love our weatherman, VAN THE MAN!!!! He is the best, afterall!

Weather Guys---I surely don't blame you for what happened! I is NC afterall! I have lived in Winston Salem for 25 years and have learned to be expecting nothing and be expecting everything when it comes to the weather here. I have to say...the best snow in the world is the snow that doesn't make the roads so dangerous nobody can travel...and is deep enough for us to play in for a little while...and is absolutely gorgeous!!!

I heard Van say that one model predicted the possibility of snow or a rain/snow mix for Wednesday night. Which model was it and what does this model say for sunday? It looks like the chances for wintry weather this weekend are small, but colder weather should move in behind the weekend system. What are the winter weather chances for next week?
