Our thoughts and prayers go out to Scotty Wayne's family, friends and classmates. He was killed Saturday when the car he was riding in went off Interstate 85 north of Lexington and hit some trees.
Wayne was a star on Southern Guilford H.S. football team and had reportedly accepted a full athletic scholarship to East Carolina University.
Working past retirement?

News
Nearly half the workers in America expect to still be working by the time they hit 67 and not just because they'll need the money.
A survey by the U.S. division of Toronto-based Sun Life Financial finds more than 80 percent of those who plan to work past the usual retirement age say the main reason they'll be doing it is to stay mentally engaged.
So what about you? Have you considered working past retirement? Is it too early to panic?
The company that handles these blogs has scheduled a production release for this afternoon beginning just before 1 p.m. (eastern time). For several hours, the blogs will be set to "read only" status, which means you'll be able to see everything already posted, but you won't be able to post anything or make comments.
It's expected the maintenance will be completed by late afternoon, presumably before 5 p.m.

All Around, A Sad Story

The images are disturbing and hard to watch, and now police say they've
caught the man who was
caught on tape hitting and kicking several dogs in a High Point backyard.
The case is particularly interesting because police initially arrested and charged the wrong man. He
protested his innocence, and eventually received an apology for the mix-up.
The
abused dogs have since been euthanized, because officials said they were beyond help and would pose a danger to someone who adopted them.
All around, it's been a sad story.

- The sale of malt beverages
- The sale of wine
- Whether ABC stores should be allowed
- Mixed beverage sales in restaurants
So, what do you think? Will the vote pass? Will
Asheboro finally get with the times or should they stay the same, and not allow these changes?

What Your Doctor REALLY Thinks...
Jul 24, 2008 | 5:16 AM PST
Category:
News
An article in the July edition of Reader's Digest discusses what doctor's around the country really think about you, the patient.
Some of the quotes mentioned in the article:
- "When a doctor tells you to lose 15 to 20 pounds, what they really mean is you need to lose 50."
- "I have patients with whom I spend enormous amounts of time, explaining things and coming up with treatment strategy. Then I get e-mails a few days later, saying they were looking at this Web site that says something completely different and wacky, and they want to do it. To which I say (but I don't), "So why don't you get the Web site to take over your care?"
- "We deal more commonly with old people. So we become much more enthusiastic when a young person comes along. So the younger and more attractive you are, the more likely you are to get more of our time."
- "Doctors are only interested in whether they are inconvenienced - most don't care if you have to wait for them.
So, what do you think about the comments made by some doctors around the country? Are the appropriate? Do you expect more from your doctor, or are the comments expected?
On his radio show, host
Michael Savage recently made several inflammatory statements about autistic children and the diagnosis of the disorder. He called autism "a fraud and a racket" and said that, 99 percent of the time, autism is a brat who hasn't been told to cut out the act.
Parents with autistic children and other autism advocates obviously are up in arms over Savage's remarks. Clearly, he overstated things.
But upon further review, it seems to me that Savage's intent was not conveyed by his words. Essentially, he wanted to say something other than what came out.
I suspect Savage meant to rail against the over-diagnosis of autism, not against children who actually have the disease. He apparently thinks doctors and/or parents are too quick to label a child as autistic just because he or she is a "brat." I doubt Savage would deny that some people actually have autism, and they're not just brats participating in a racket.

The Black National Anthem
Jul 2, 2008 | 1:57 PM PST

News
Correction: Initially, I was under the impression that Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing was simply an alternate version of the Star Spangled Banner that included different lyrics. The singer in Denver sang a hybrid of the Star Spangled Banner, combining the tune and some words of the national anthem with words from the Black National Anthem. The text below has been amended.
A woman scheduled to sing the Star Spangled Banner at a "State of the City" address in Denver surprised the crowd by combining lyrics from "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing" -- also known as the Black National Anthem -- with the traditional words.
Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing was written as a poem by James Weldon Johnson and set to music by his brother, John Johnson, according to Wikipedia.
Lyrics
Lift ev'ry voice and sing,
Till earth and heaven ring.
Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise,
High as the list'ning skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,
Let us march on till victory is won.
Stony the road we trod,
Bitter the chast'ning rod,
Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;
Yet with a steady beat,
Have not our weary feet,
Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears has been watered,
We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered,
Out from the gloomy past,
Till now we stand at last
Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.
God of our weary years,
God of our silent tears,
Thou who has brought us thus far on the way;
Thou who has by Thy might,
Led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee,
Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee,
Shadowed beneath thy hand,
May we forever stand,
True to our God,
True to our native land.
The rendition upset Denver's mayor and other city officials, and the singer apologized.
How would you have reacted? Did you know there even was a Black National Anthem?
The revelation that 17 teenage girls in a Massachusetts high school formed a
pact to get pregnant together has resulted in a lot of shock, outrage, blame and many other emotions.
Now, the Gloucester school system is considering offering birth control to students without telling their parents. The possibility of such a move raises a couple of questions:
- If the girls wanted to get pregnant, how would birth control without parental consent change the situation?
- Is less parental involvement the solution to teen pregnancy?
Apparently, parents are lining up on both sides of the issue. What about you?

4. My ex-husband stole my car so i couldn't drive to work.
5. My route to work was shut down by a presidential motorcade.
6. I wasn't thinking and accidentally went to my old job.
7. I was indicted for securities fraud this morning.
8. The line was too long at Starbucks.
9. I was trying to get my gun back from the police.
10. I didn't have money for gas because all of the pawn shops were closed.
What are some excuses that you have used before?

Rufus Terrill, owner of a downtown Atlanta bar named
O'Terrills, has had it with the drug dealers and vandals around his business. So, he has done
what any sane American man would do in this situation—build a robot out
of a meat smoker to lay down the law. The "BumBot," as many of
O'Terrills' patrons have dubbed it, is basically a meat smoker mounted
onto a three-wheeled scooter. Armaments include a spotlight,
loudspeaker, water cannon and an infrared camera. Plus, the whole thing
is covered in rubber for protection.
When necessary, Terrill fires up the 400lb device and powers it from
afar with a remote control. Using the control and a walkie-talkie, he
approaches the vagrants around his bar and a local day care center to
inform them via the robot's loudspeaker that they are trespassing on
private property. If that doesn't do the trick, he gets rough with the
water cannon.
So what do
you think of the BumBot? Does it dehumanize the homeless? Do we need one here in North Carolina?
