This morning we aired a story about Massachusetts considering lowering the legal drinking limit to .02, down from .08.

The state is wanting to reduce the risk of people driving intoxicated, but it is a controversial topic and has sparked a heated debate.

Right now, the legal drinking limit in North Carolina is .08. Would you like to see N.C lower the legal drinking limit? Or is it low enough already?

There should be zero tolerance to drinking and driving. Any alcohol content in your body should cause you to get arrested, unless they have a prescription like cough medicine. If you have blood alcohol content above zero you should be arrested. No drinking and driving period. Too many alcohol related deaths are caused by drinking. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

You'd be surprisedhow much alcohol (and work!) it takes to get to .08. Take a 'drink and drive' course...you'll find out! My husband di this and half the persons there couldn't bring themselves to reach the legal limit,my husband found it pretty hard to too! Go ahead and lower it, exactly what harm can it do???

SOme prescription medicines warn not to drive because of the effects on ones reflexes. I agree with MSKittyKitty. If consuming something make operating a car dangerous, than why allow it. Here in Greensboro, there are allot of college students. Some of these may be "new drinkers". How much alcohol would it take to make a new drinker dangerous? People die everyday because of drivers who are intoxicated.

Change the limit. Sure. Why not? It may save someone’s life.
Here is one for you to think over though. A man runs into the rear of my vehicle. He then speeds off. OK now we have a hit and run. 2 to 3 days later police are able to track down his plate and the individual admitted to hitting my vehicle and leaving the scene. As it turns out the man was driving with a revoked license and had 13 previous DUI's. That’s right “13”. A few other things also need to change, don’t you think, along with the limit?

Cook, I loved the "Teddy" comment, but didn't you mean when he must be in D.C., if Massachusetts is the place that wants to lower the limit? I would think he would need to stay there in MA (it would have covered his little "accident" years ago). Add to the list drinking coffee, because plenty of people aren't paying attention to the road while they sip on their hot coffee, and try not to spill it! I am glad that we have bloggers who are aware that many "over-the-counter" cough medicines have alcohol in them!!! Smart group!!! So, if you drop the limit to .00, does that mean that you don't drive after you've taken your cough syrup? Yes, it does!!! Be careful what you wish for, because you might get it; and then get a DUI for driving while you have a cold! NO ONE SHOULD "DRINK AND DRIVE" (and you all know what I mean)!!! There should not be an allowance of an acceptable level of alcohol to drink before you drive! Of course, that will put all kinds of restaurants and bars out of business, because patrons will not drive there, leave their vehicle, and call a cab (look at Tolly Carr). If you are going to drink, don't drive; either stay home or have a designated driver who doesn't drink!!!

And cook2712.....you have to add men shaving...yes thats right.....I saw a guy run right through the red light one morning as he was trying to shave under his chin with a rechargeable razor. I say lower the limit...what can it hurt....really?

Drinking is a personal freedom and should be done responsibly and drinking and driving is against the law, lowering the limit is going to clog the court system up. I say raise the penalty something like more community service.

raising the penalty...I think jail time..but that would clog upour jails even more. If community service than they should be forced to clean up d&d accident scenes and visit those in hospital and physical rehab facilities hurt by d&d..maybe that would affect them.

I personally like going out to a nice dinner and having (a) drink, so I don't go along with the .00 tolerence. Drinking (one beer, one shot, or one mixed) a drink within the course of an hour as you eat your meal will not affect your driving ability (on average, depending on your weight and alcohol tolerence) in the course of an hour...

What I don't agree with is a tolerent drinking level that would allow someone to drive while feeling buzzed, woozy, or outright drunk. .02 seems to make a reasonable allowance for a social drink in a reasonable amount of time, .08 allows you to drive while having a major buzz and impaired judgement.

I agree. Life does not seem to be a precious thing anymore. Lowering the drinking limit is a good thing, maybe those folks in higher places are finally coming around. Go for it. Save our kids and loved ones.

As of now, if you are convicted of DWI, your BAL cannot exceed that of .04 for something like 3 years. I think perhaps they should lower it to .04 REGARDLESS. But the idea of .00 is a little bit on the overkill side. I mean, last night my wife and I went out to dinner, and she had ONE GLASS of wine--no more. So by this .00 standard, she's an irresponsible criminal if she drives after having a glass of wine with a 4 course meal? I don't agree--sure, lower it to .04, make ANY DWI offense a FELONY, and that should do it without criminalizing someone for having A BEER with dinner.
