The National Weather Service will have a SKYWARN Basic Spotter training class, June 9th, 7:00 - 9:30 pm.

This is a great class to attend if you are interested in learning more about severe weather, even if you've taken the class before.

It's free (we love that!) and will be held in Lexington at the Davidson Emergency Management Building, 935 North Main Street.

Among the topics discussed:

  • how and why buildings fall in high winds
  • thunderstorm development and severity
  • recognition of storm/cloud elements
  • anitcipating storm motion, intensity, and severity based on cloud structure
  • lightning dynamics and threats

For more information, please contact Jeff Orrock at jeff.orrock@noaa.gov or (919) 515-8209, ext. 223.

Is there an Age Limit to this (like how young). I am 17 but I didn't know how young you could attend

Tyler: I've been to quite a few of these classes and have seen people old and young alike attend. If you have the willingness to learn and the passion for weather I believe any age would be welcome. Just one tip, Jeff Orrock has a lot of information to cover, so if it says over by 9:30, plan on an extra half-hour just in case!

Tyler, you are welcome to attend. No age limits that I know of, and you are plenty bright enough to understand the material.

Emily, is there anyway that you can ask the SkyWarn people to think about giving a class in Burlington??? Everytime there is a class, it is usually too far away for me to attend, and I have wanted to attend since you first started announcing them!!! The closest that they had was Greensboro once, and that is still a pretty good drive from Mebane (especially at night). There probably isn't a lot that they can tell me about weather that I don't already know, but I LOVE keeping up with and learning everything I can about the weather! I try to send your weather team all news regarding the weather in Mebane, and I've heard Van mention it a couple of times. So, please, ask them would they be interested in heading at least to Burlington, as I am sure we have a lot of interested people that would love to attend! Thanks!!!

HA! Tyler, you can make it to Davidson County. I have faith in you. :)

Seriously, keep your eyes out for classes in Winston-Salem for future reference. That may be easier for you travelwise and after you get that BASIC class under your belt, you can get into the Advanced class.

I love the weather. I love animals. I think that "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" "Bones" and "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" ROCK. As music goes: Yo-Yo Ma, Daughtry, Allyson Krauss (and Union Station), Black Eyed Peas, most any John Williams soundtrack (especially Memoirs of a Geisha and Harry Potter), Wagner, Handel, Stevie Nicks, Bonnie Raitt, and I could go on and on.
