Byrd's Eye View

Last Post 20 hours Ago

After years of watching tulips and daffodils bloom in the yards of my neighbors, I finally remembered to plant some bulbs last fall.  Some of them have pushed through the soil and are showing off in my front yard.  So what happened to the ones that I so lovingly planted in the back yard?

The answer:  the dog.

After kneeling, digging, positioning, covering, patting down and watering about 50 bulbs in a lovely, meandering pattern across my back yard, I stiffly stood to survey my hard work.  What I saw was my dog, Morgan (who I call Divot when I'm particularly exasperated with her), sitting happily at attention next to me.  Behind her wagging tail was a trail of freshly unearthed bulbs.

I patted her on her smart little head and walked back to the house.

What have you planted and what are your favorite springtime flowers?

Last summer, I spent endless hours making a natural area that covered most of my front yard. I did this as a labor of love to my husband who push mows a quite large yard every week...I planted pink mums against silver dust against a huge elephant ear on one side...I planted the orange day lilies against white mums against some sort of bush that starts with a C with another huge bush (also don't know the name) with white flowers on the other...thats entangled on the other side..and there's azelas and rhododendrums in there too.
Then in this labor of love natural area, I have sections of irises, hostas, ferns, silver dust, yellow mums, daylillies, that monkey grass stuff, and green leaf (turn red in the fall)bushes that surround the pines and dogwoods...the ferns died...they 'aint' coming back.
the hybiscus in back also died last winter...wonder if that will come back...prob not..
In the back yard is the assortment of $.75 cent plants that were half dead at Lowes and Home Depot...poor things just needed to be watered..
OMG, I am WAY too crazy about plants, I could type all day..I am going to play in the dirt now.

My Mother in Law’s Garden.
My Friend Judy’s Garden.

My photos don’t do my top three gardeners justice. I’ll try to do better. All three of them can make a stick grow!

Thanks Cook!
Lola’s Pics were taken with a DSC-H5 Sony Cybershot Last Spring. Beware of the shutter button on the Sony. It has a tendency to pop off for no reason. The Tech’s like to charge $200.00 to fix it! Don’t believe what they say about battery life either. I carry a pocketful of re-chargeables everywhere I go. However it takes a great shot with a macro to 12 x zoom and a Carl Zeiss lens. It also takes movies in mpeg quality. It’s buttons are real easy to figure out so a beginner can shoot with this camera. It’s actually easier to use than the canon a-300.

Judy’s were taken with a Canon Power Shot a-300 three or four springs ago. I need to catch her garden in full bloom sometime. The Salisbury Post featured her one year.

To me, Spring is tulips, daffodils and Easter lillies--I have all 3 in my yard (the lillies tend to bloom later).

I always scatter some assorted wildflower seeds. It's always fun to see what comes up and butterflies love some of them.

I always try to pick something new and different each year, too. I've been browsing the seed catalogs ever since they arrived in January. I've decided to try some Kong variety sunflower seeds this year. The seed company ad says they grow to around 14 feet high. I'm pretty certain the seed company ads are reliable. I've never heard anyone complain about those seeds for 800 pound and 1300 pound pumpkins not producing as advertised. I'm thinkin' if I get soil tests and optimize the fertilizer and water them with my rain barrels, I might get 15 footers. That should impress the neighbor kids.

For early spring I have bands of crocus around Lenten Rose (helleboris), burgandy lace ajuga, evergreen candy-tuft and creeping phlox and vinca minor. For mid-spring I plant caladium bulbs around Deleware Valley Azaleas with Hershey azaleas. I usually put in Homestead Verbena as a ground cover and Brazillian Verbena for butterflies. I have bands of Russian Sage around the perimeter of woods with five colors of Butterfly bushes. For summer fragrance I have Klimes hardy gardenias and have six clematis climbing a fence. On the upper fence is carolina Jessamine. In the sunnier spots I usually use any of a variety of Wave petunias. I also have stella d'oro, Pardon Me, and Yellow Happy Returns daylilies. If I really liked gardening, perhaps I'd do more....

Emily,

To have really pretty tulips, you will need to cut them back in late August and in early October dig them out of the ground and wrap them in a slightly moist paper towel and put them in the refrigerator. The ground does not get cold enough for them to completely go dormnat in the winter, as they do in their native Holland, and they feed on that bulb, therefore lowering your potential for blooming. Then you replant them in late February so that in March-April they bloom prolifically.

mrmajestic, your garden sounds lovely! I really love candy tuft, Carolina Jasmine and the varying varieties of verbena. I've not had good luck with butterfly bushes (perhaps too much red clay in my yard?) but there is a lovely sage with fuscia flowers that looks extra pretty in the early summer. The only daylilies that I've put out were stella's and they are a fun little pop of color.

How neat!

I don't know if I'm dedicated enough to dig up tulip bulbs... I'll let you know in the fall. :)

There is a really neat company for those of you who like antique bulbs: www.oldhousegardens.com. They have some really beautiful, old types that you just can't find in local nurseries.

Enjoy your bloomers!!

Emily, get Doug and Cook to come over to your place. Do a story about how weather and gardening are so important to each other! They could design a showplace! You could do progression shots! Your garden expert should get in on this!

I love the weather. I love animals. I think that "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" "Bones" and "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" ROCK. As music goes: Yo-Yo Ma, Daughtry, Allyson Krauss (and Union Station), Black Eyed Peas, most any John Williams soundtrack (especially Memoirs of a Geisha and Harry Potter), Wagner, Handel, Stevie Nicks, Bonnie Raitt, and I could go on and on.
