Byrd's Eye View

by Emily_Byrd from WGHP Weather

Here is a transcript of a voicemail message that I received today:

"Hi Emily, this is Miss Simmons.  I, uh, watch you every morning on, uh, FOX 8 weather and being as that we, my husband and I, were discussing how totally disgusted we are with your silliness over the music in the mornings, antagonizing Cindy to join in your dancing and whatever, we're going to have to block you.  Sorry!"

Now, aside from the ring-and-run aspect of this message, (she didn't leave a return phone number or any way to contact her), I was a little surprised.  The observation that I hear most from people is that they really enjoy the music and shots of all of us dancing in the morning.  Furthermore, it is very rare that I ever appear on-camera dancing.

I would like to know what you think.  Do you like the 10-20 seconds that we have music and show our crew enjoying it right before weather in the morning?  Would you rather not have that as part of the morning newscast?

Sound off!

NO - I absolutely do not ever want to see you guys and gals have any fun what so ever!!! JK, lol...don't worry about it EM, you are very dignified and professional on camera, as you should be, but if anyone goes to work in this world and doesn't have a bit of fun with their co-workers, then I feel really sorry for them...she's just jealous of your dancing skills...lol
TURN IT UP.

I enjoy watching the morning crew have a good time. I think it makes you more approachable to the people watching. Keep dancing!

First she identifies herself as "MISS Simmons", and then turns around and says "my HUSBAND and I"? Sounds like some Puritan ideals from the 14th century and they just do not approve of dancing. They probably shouldn't even own a TV. Boogie down!

First of all, DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING!!! The morning news is great just the way it is. I would rather watch a group of newscasters having a good time and loving what they do, than to have dead seriousness all the time.

If this woman, or anyone else, doesn't like it, they know how to use the remote and change the channel.

Emily, you are getting it from all angles all of a sudden. First, on the blogs, and now on the voicemails. Just keep your head up, and don't worry about it!!!

As far as the 10-20 seconds of music in the morning and the crew enjoying it: In the words of NASCAR on Fox, CRANK IT UP!!!!!

Miss Emily,
I totally enjoy the music segment that you guys have and the dancing is usually on when I am in the shower. I won't laugh at your dancing if you won't laugh at my singing.
You Go Girl!

TJMac, the Miss/Mrs. error was mine. It sounded like she said "Miss", so I typed it verbatim. Obviously, our caller is a Mrs.

It's always interesting how people can react very differently to the same thing. The saying that "you can't please everyone all the time" is very true!

We always welcome constructive criticism and I appreciate your comments here.

NDD, it only seems like I'm getting walloped -- it's quite alright. My skin is pretty thick most of the time, but this call bothered me. I suppose because she seemed angry and offended about something for which I've only heard positive feedback.

Caddy, I would NEVER laugh at your singing!

The praise and support (both solicited and unsolicited) that you give is greatly appreciated.

E Byrd
I am really concerned. First you are looking down at people and now you are a silly antagonist that dances. What next? :>)

Do you really feel the need to ask this?
We start every morning with you all. Have for as long as I can remember.

Here is a question for you E Byrd. Is she a Miss or is she married?

Our TV has button that allows us to change the channel if we do not like what we see on the tube. We are not using the button.

I hope Miss Simmons will use her TV button and block you as she says. Personally I think she is all talk and will watch to see if you change because of her comments. I bet if she is married her husband does not know she brought him into it and he would be very upset knowing this. Miss Simmons is probably jealous because her husband pays more attention to you all than he does to her.
Oh my, that was not very nice was it? I guess she is entitled to her opinion. I just wish she would keep it to herself.

Don't change, how does it affect her?
You can't please everyone all the time.
Be yourselves, life is much to short to wear a mask.

I agree with tagyurit TURN IT UP

You know, this is local morning news. I figure if Brian Williams can go on SNL (and I don't take him any less seriously for it), you, Cindy and whoever else can cut a rug if you darn well please. Maybe Miss/Mrs./Ms Simmons just isn't a morning person. Or, maybe she's pulling your leg--I know that I have said/written things as a joke and had them misinterpreted. Either way, I think you should, as Mr. Darling says on Andy Griffith, "Dance 'til your stockins are hot and ravelin!"

Mayberry Man- "Would you be my mudder-figure?" "Its me! Its me! Its Ernest T!!!! Sorry I just had to add that!!! You make me smile! ((Mrs. Wiiiileeee))
Honestly.. sometimes.. I just can't keep from moving if its good music that brings up great memories from the past! That's just my personality! It does embarrass my daughters sometimes though!!! (Never dance down the isle in Wal-Mart!!! They will never forgive you!)

I remember growing up and watching the TV news. It was usually formal and stuffy. The only relief we ever got was when we watched channel 8 and were lucky enough to catch the weather with Frank Deal. I am so glad that all the news casts these days are so down to earth and genuine. I love the morning show because you are all positive and upbeat. If I had to guess I would say that the vast majority of folks that watch in the mornings watch because you all bring a light to our day!

Well I wasn't a Fox8 viewer until I started blogging here and I wanted to see just some of the people I was interacting with in these blogs, and I must say I watch every morning now while getting ready for work. I'm hooked when I first heard the music I thought wow someone has good taste in music and Cindy you got some moves Girl I am impressed! You know Music and sports transcends many of the problems we face in our society and I have found it to be a bridge and positive aspect of our society. As for the Emily bashers you know she is my adopted lil sis and you don’t want Cooks and I to do a ride by cause that’s how we roll!

I want to see Neill McN and Van Denton bust a move...can you move that to 6 and 11?

And Cindy, bless your heart, it's "aisle" in Wal-mart, not "isle" (unless it's in Guam).

I have proof that Ms. Luck has a rowdy side - I have secret video of her buying a chili dog at Cook Out on North Main.

I'll start the bidding at 100 kroner.

I love the weather. I love animals. I think that "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" "Bones" and "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" ROCK. As music goes: Yo-Yo Ma, Daughtry, Allyson Krauss (and Union Station), Black Eyed Peas, most any John Williams soundtrack (especially Memoirs of a Geisha and Harry Potter), Wagner, Handel, Stevie Nicks, Bonnie Raitt, and I could go on and on.
