We did a story this morning about the proposal to lower the legal drinking age from 21 to 18.

Do you think this is a good idea or a bad idea, and why?

Are you kidding? They are still kids even though they think they are adults. They are so dissrespectful when they are on the road its pathetic. They cut you off and then flip you off. How can they drive with a cell phone in one hand and a beer in the other. They are hardly old enough and responsible to drive, let alone drink. Kids nowdays have it all handed to them by their parents. Most have never worked for anything or had chores to do etc. and we want to hand them a 40oz? I don't think so. Why don't we give them a handgun also? Then that will make it complete and they can feel like a real man. That's just opening up a 5 gallon bucket of worms. 18 years old are not responsible enough to drink, and most of the 21 year olds aren't either.

I am just appalled at who came up with that idea. It had to be some politcal drunk, maybe like Ted Kennedy.

A quick note: it is the Boulder Police Chief who is behind the idea, and drinking and driving will still be illegal for everyone.

Lower the drinking age? Then what? The gov't takes the power from the parents & gives it to the child, children are killing parents, siblings, etc everyday & when you legally give permission to a child to drink & they kill someone "society" says "Ah, what a shame, he/she is only 18 so we sometimes lock them up & think "reform" jail time usually only makes one worse, lowering the drinking age will only make a child more irresponsible, more disrespectable & they are legally given a "tool" for murder.
Randolph Co is a dry county, where do you think these kids will go for alcohol? Why place more drunk drivers on our roads?
Do we forget we were 18 one time?
There's an old saying that goes like this "If it isn't broke, don't fix it"

its bad enough 21 year olds drink, they need to raise it up again, to 23. 18 and 21 year olds still act like kids. for a member of a the law to say something like that is crazy.

Lower the drinking age? You gotta be kidding! Kids these days, most of them are more disrespectful and irresponsible than ever. Letting them drink would be even more irresponsible. It seems to me that no one cares about raising their kids right anymore. Lets just let them go. Who cares. This is what it seems that people are doing. I care though. Drinking causes so much damage. It not only harms the individual but everyone around them. As for the remark made....Letting kids drink helps them to become responsible adults. WHAT AN IDIOT!!!!! It only creates disaster and younger alcoholics. Kudos to the Fox 8 four this morning for your comments on this. I agree with you. If commercials and everyone would not glorify and make drinking look fun maybe more kids would not be so quick to drink anyway. There needs to be advertisements on drinking just like the smoking adds you see on TV. If it does not look fun or appealing to kids they may not be so quick to do it. It starts with parents and follow up with advertisements.

I am a Senior Citizen and like Cindy said, we were more responsible back in the day than kids are now. I had a BB gun when I was 8 years old. My dad taught me how to shoot it and be careful with it. Wouid I give a 15 year old a BB gun today? That's just asking for it. Are you kidding. Kids nowdays are just plain mean and dissrespectful to his parents and teachers and anyone that is older.BOTTOM LINE, THEY ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE ENOUGH EVEN TO DRIVE, LET ALONE DRINK. THAT'S MY STORY AND I'M STICKING TO IT.

Here's the whole idea that some people are getting at. They think if you are old enough to vote or go into the military and die for your country, certainly you should be able to make the choice to drink alcohol or not.

Most teens who are going to drink are drinking anyway, breaking the law makes it more appealing. This coming from a former rebellious teenager.

Maybe the voting age and the age requirement to enter the military should be raised. Doubt that would work for our government...LOL

Does anyone remember being under 21? I do. My 21st birthday was such a big deal. Now, looking back I think it is rediculous that I celebrated one birthday in particular just because I could legally purchase alcohol. And it took many years before I learned how to handle it, drink in moderation, know my limit and definately not get behind the wheel. There have been several good friends who have stopped me from driving home from various places, and I thank them.

Now that I'm in my thirties, I rarely drink outside the home. It's just not convenient and it is very expensive. Oh and kids definately slow you down...have four kids and then talk to me about drinking.

Drinking and driving is a community issue not just a teen problem, you just hear about it more when it is a teenager who is drunk and involved in a fatal accident. I keep thinking about the news anchor involved in that unfortunate incident last year. That could have happened to anyone...many people I know drink that much and get behind the wheel. I'm talking GROWN people who should know better or someone should

I'm talking GROWN people who should know better or someone should have taken their keys and called them a cab.

We ALL need to be more aware of the dangers of drinking and driving, don't just put it off on teens being irresponsible.

Just a few reminders of how to keep from drinking and driving...

Designated Driver
Taxi CAB
Drunk Bus (something they do on college campuses)
Call your momma (what I will tell my kids to do)because I would rather get out of bed at 2am to go pick them up from a party than to have to go down to the morgue and identify them

This is a scary topic...especially for parents. I'm not sure that I would be excited about the age being lifted but I will certainly not act like they won't do it just because the legal age is 21.

I'll probably get some flack for this posting, but we can't just think that the law is going to protect us...it does start at home.

I see where you are coming from. but the issue is to change the law. There are lots of people that drink and drive. We have enough of them on the road now let alone lowering the age to have more on the road riding around in mom's duv and drinking. Before you can join the armed service you go through a rigid training to see if you can qualify to handle the job. With drinking you can purchase booze at any convenient store. You are comparing apples with oranges. I neither drink and disapprove of drinking whatsoever. How can a drinking driver be a community problem? For a teen it is a parent problem. And for the old drivers and drinking it is a police problem. Seens like you are trying to smoothe over the drinking problem, like all people that drink. Have you ever heard of a drinker to admit he or she has a drinking problem? I haven't.

It's a community problem being that all people in the community who serve alcohol, restaurants, bars, grocery stores, mini-marts etc. need to stop serving or selling to minors. Also they need to stop serving to people who are legal and smell to the high heavens of alcohol.

So what if I drink now and then, I don't think it is a moral issue but we live in the belt and so there are plenty of people who disagree with me. And yes, I have heard of people admitting to having problems...it is called AA.

I think there are more people ignoring the problem by the way. People who would rather condemn people who drink and just refuse to talk about it to their kids.

I am not smoothing over the problem, just talking about it...that's what this blog thing is for.

First, I don't think this is a good idea at all. It amazes me that a chief of police would think of this idea. Secondly, let me say that there are alot of teens out there that are very troubled and disrespectful and all the other stuff that was mentioned. That is not all teens though. There are some great teenagers that are more responsible then some adults. Teens who are serving in the soup kitchens, helping at the local elementary school, going on summer mission trips and I could go on and on. Some of these things that you have said about them are things that they have learned from adults. They are disrespectful because adults allow them to be. So in reality, whose fault is it that some of them are nothing but trouble? I know I probably just opened a can of worms here, but I wish people would not lump all the teens into one group. There are alot of good mannered, hard working, and respectful ones too!

Most drinkers defend other drinkers and are against anything that has to do with changing the drinking laws. It's like cigarette smoking. Smoking has never killed anyone else other than the smoker. Drunk drivers has killed thousands of innocent people that didn't have a chance to live out teir life naturally, because someGROWN drunk was driving and killed them. And if you have money you can get it reduced and plea bargain for a few month in prison and community time. Sure teens are going to get it if they want it. Or someone will get if for them. Why make it legal. Why does alcohol have to be served at all these teen parties? What is the point of drinking anyway? To get a buzz? Tell me all the good points of drinking and I can give more reason why you should not drink.

Although I agree that most are not mature or responsible enough, I feel that if our 18 year old children are able to join our Armed Forces they should be able to drink. Contradictory to that statement, I don't feel that they are mature or responsible enough to drink at 18 in the civilian world but also that we as parents should be teaching our children responsibility in ALL aspects of life, including drinking alcohol.

Ms Kitty, you are right...people need to learn to have fun without drinking. I would like for people to learn from my mistakes, when I can share them with other people.

I'm not defending anyone who breaks the law by the way...just to clear that up.

Fox8 you guys ROCK, for having this conversation at all. I had no idea changing this law was even being considered anywhere, especially by law enforcement. What are they thinking? I'd like to read more about this before making any more comments...

MsKittyKitty,
I agree that you can have fun without drinking but it has taken my years of experience to realize it. I'm sure that I'm not the only one that has learned the hard way. I also know a lot of alcoholics who HAVE admitted that drinking is a problem for them and they are doing something about it. But although some drink-----that DOES NOT make them an alcoholic. Some of us are allergic to drinking and some are not.

I agree with Homeschool mom, from your blogs I can see that you have control of your children. I realy admire you for that and I respect you very much. I also know a lot of kids that are like yours.. I find them polite to everyone, kind, courteous, and respectful. I love kids like that. I didn't mean to put all teens in that category, I'm just using my experience from what I see on the roads and at the grocery stores, Wal marts etc. Again I say I'm sorry that you thought I was putting all teens in one barrell. You don't respond a lot but I treasure your words. You have integrity and I admire you for that.

I love the weather. I love animals. I think that "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" "Bones" and "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" ROCK. As music goes: Yo-Yo Ma, Daughtry, Allyson Krauss (and Union Station), Black Eyed Peas, most any John Williams soundtrack (especially Memoirs of a Geisha and Harry Potter), Wagner, Handel, Stevie Nicks, Bonnie Raitt, and I could go on and on.
