Byrd's Eye View

by Emily_Byrd from WGHP Weather

Last Post 18 hours Ago

Last night, I just had to watch the CNN/You Tube Democratic "Debate".  The premise was great -- regular Americans posing their questions on the website, YouTube, for Democratic candidates to answer.  I loved it because the questions were direct and in many cases, tough and sometimes irreverent.

It was NOT a debate, however.  It was more of a random, "getting to know you" session.  There are simply too many candidates (from both parties) to have a debate.  I wonder if the networks shouldn't hold off on using the term "debate" until there is clearly a duo or trio of candidates with enough delegates' support to recognize as the top choices from each party.

Did you watch?  Would you (or did you) submit questions online for the candidates to answer?

I did watch some of it. I guess I probably would submit a question. I think you are right though. It really was not a debate!

i did not watch partly due to being so tight I do not have cable. I would not have watched regardless. Until the field is pared down to about 4 on either side there is not much need listening to their spouting off and patting themselves on the back.

If I could ask a question, even though Iraq and immigration are up front, I would ask their standing on taxes. Do they or do they not support a fair tax system.

A second would be on term limits as I truely and strongly feel the career politicians are the major problem now.

I didn't see it either. But, since I saw John Edwards tell Hilary Clinton (while they thought the microphones were off) that they needed to exclude several of the prospective candidates at their next debate, and Hilary agreed, I thought that was very "nasty" plot against the other candidates. I understand that you really cannot have a true "debate" except with a certain number of people included. But, to plot against each other, it makes me wonder if they can truly run the county. But, I'll give anyone a chance to say their views.

For those that missed it, you can see the entire "debate" on CNN.com and then you will know what was said, and who said it!
I was very impressed with Obama. He seems to have a good head on his shoulders, and I think Hillary better watch out!!LOL

Don't think that I am in any way encouraging voter apathy, but until NC gets its presidential primary moved up to compete with the other "Super Tuesday" states, is there any reason to follow the debates and campaigns at all at this point? By February of next year, Iowa and New Hampshire (representing the most accurate cross-section of Americans, of course) will have told about a dozen other states which two candidates to vote for, and by the time our primary gets here, our votes will be a moot point. In 2004, Kerry had the nomination locked up for months before we in NC even had a chance to vote for our own John Edwards (who I think had already conceded at the time.) Then there's about 6 or 7 months of campaigning until the D and R candidates have the their 3 debates where they're not allowed to address each other. Illuminating!

That is truly interesting, Like_Radium, why does the "country" feel as if Iowa and New Hampshire represents the most accurate cross-section of Americans? (To me, they would be the least accurate selection.) I know that maybe it's because they hold their primary so "early", but I don't see them as being a good representation of the American people as a whole.

I over heard Iowa and New Hampshire plotting when they thought the mic was off to exclude North Carolina from early primaries. Come on now you can’t be that naive to think with all the money and power at stake either party will not turn on each other you must not watch survivor!

I think I would have asked their thoughts on the line item veto.

The republicans whined about a line item veto all the while Reagan and Bush sr was in office now look this up Clinton agreed with the line item veto and the republican controlled congress block the vote on it!

Okay, speaking of the Democratic candidates, how do the Democrats feel about Barack Obama's statement that if he is elected president, that he WILL INVADE Pakistan, and impose sanctions on them?

Just to be clear, Obama didn't say "if he is elected president, that he WILL INVADE Pakistan". He gave two specific conditions that would have to be considered.

This is actually his quote:

"There are terrorists holed up in those mountains who murdered 3,000 Americans. They are plotting to strike again.... If we have actionable intelligence about high-value terrorist targets and President Musharraf won't act, we will."

Actionable intelligence and President Musharraf's refusal to take action.

It didn't sound to me like Obama is going to declare war as he's dressing for the Inaugural Ball (if he gets to that point).

How many of you know that Obama was reared in the Muslim faith? He downplays it and I don't know which sect of the Muslim faith he was reared in, but you should give it some thought when election time comes. At least investigate before deciding on whether or not to vote for him. Which, of course, you should do with all of the candidates. Contrary to popular opinion, their private lives DO play a major role in their public lives. What they do in their private lives, they will ultimately do in their public lives.

I think it is pretty well known. I say this and people disagree with me at work but as long as this country is called The United States of America there will never and I say never be a Black man as president! The very foundation on which this country stands would never let that happen. Just my opinion good bad right or wrong. After 8 years of a born again christian in office I'm ready for a change I'll take a vodoo priest anything!!

Hey Axe, what do you have against another born again Christian being President?

catfish if you study history you will find that at the root of all wars and conflict is religion which amounts to pure vanity my God your god etc. If I had my way I would outlaw all religions and take the money they steal from the people playing on their emotions and do real charity! not paying 60 million to little boys who were raped by priest. Like I have said before organized religion will be the downfall of civilization!

That's good because Christianity is not a religon. It's a relationship.

Call it what you want but it is a lifestyle that promotes racism, sexism, violence and a magical gift in the afterlife. And it has lead to almost every single conflict in the history of human civilization and it should be banned from the face of the earth along with Islam!

who do you want to be President then? Everyone single person on this earth follows some sort of religion. Even Atheism is a religion.

Everyone does, but your saying that you want someone who doesn't follow any religion and that is not going to happen!

I love the weather. I love animals. I think that "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" "Bones" and "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" ROCK. As music goes: Yo-Yo Ma, Daughtry, Allyson Krauss (and Union Station), Black Eyed Peas, most any John Williams soundtrack (especially Memoirs of a Geisha and Harry Potter), Wagner, Handel, Stevie Nicks, Bonnie Raitt, and I could go on and on.
