Byrd's Eye View

I received an e-mail from my mom this morning that had a big, gong-like ring of truth regarding Sanjaya Malakar:

'No human being deserves the relentless dehumanizing that young man has gotten.  And we wonder about mixed messages and the perpetuation of perfectly awful adult behavior.'

This is a great point.  Mom was reacting to a story that we did on bullying, and how supportive people are of stopping bullies from preying on classmates.  In contrast, the public has bombarded Sanjaya with truly hateful messages.

Mom is right.

A lot of credit should go to Sanjaya.  No matter what a person's opinion about him, this kid (a teenager, mind you) had the guts to face critics, competitors and audience members every week and perform with a smile.  Like his voice or not, he has shown a higher standard of conduct than most of his critics.

It's hard to admit it, but Emily, your mom's right! I'm guilty as charged, of ridiculing his vocal ability, while others that I thought were much better singers were voted off. Shame on me! I need to work on this! Thanks for bringing it to my attention!

I remember seeing him during the auditions with his sister (the only part I watch). He really did have a good voice I thought. I didn't watch many of the shows cause it ain't really my demographic. But the out-takes of the show I saw made it seem like he had an awesome attitude.

I get a little creative with my own hair too. It's just hair for goodness sakes. I thought the feaux-hawk was cool, and I thought he should have done it in crown-like circular fashion on his head.

It is just fun, and only hair. I've had ponytail, flat-top, buzz cut, basic part, now I'm rockin the current style. But it doesn't matter. Anything easy works - I spend all of 30 seconds on my hair and don't ever use a comb.

I just thought it was funny that people got so worked up about it. America has strange priorities.

Seaangelrainqueen, I had to laugh out loud at your post because Mom will be thrilled that I can tell her she was right! She's a very funny gal and I don't give her nearly enough credit. I can hear her now: "SEE?? Someone thinks your mother is right!" :)
You have a big heart and generous spirit for taking a moment for introspection. And thanks (from Mom) for acknowledging her superior intellect. :)

Don't feel too bad seaangel, Sanjaya played right along. He even made jokes about his hair etc. I agree that we have all said mean things about him that were wrong, but American Idol and Sanjaya have enjoyed the attention.

Emily, by all means, please acknowledge your Mom's superior intellect, with my respect to her! ALL our Mothers know "best", it just takes us a while to figure it out! (Usually when we become mothers ourselves! LOL)

Thacker, I thought the same thing when I was watching those first shows.

It would be interesting to see American Idol eliminated contestants singing songs that we all know. Can you imagine if the contest included songwriting? Chris Daughtry would have wiped the floor with the other contestants last year.

Sanjaya may not have a versatile voice, but he showed he had a nice voice when he auditioned.

Amen, about Chris Daughtry! I stopped watching the show when he was voted off 4th, but then I realized that he would have more and better opportunities without being "obligated" to American Idol. Rock on, Chris and DAUGHTRY!!!! (He was already wiping the floor with the other contestants last year!)

This was my first season that I watched Idol.I expected the show to be a singing competition. As it played on I found it nothing more then a teen popularity contest not to be taken seriously. My criticism of Sanjaya and the show in general was based on my false assumption about Idol.Unless the show changes its format I wont watch again.

angbar, I've watched since season 2, except when I stopped last year out of protest for Chris Daughtry. You are right, it has become a "teen popularity contest", especially this year. I just don't believe that the "talent" this year was as good as on previous seasons (Just my opinion). In years past, almost "every" contestant was good enough to win. In years past, I even voted for the ones that I thought deserved to stay. But this year, I didn't vote, not one week. I'm not saying that the contestants weren't good, they just didn't seem "great". I guess that's why they "stole" Eric's idea of having a show next year with an entire band, LOL. I enjoyed, sorry Fox, watching when INXS was looking for a new lead singer to replace Michael Hutchence, who died a few years back. I heard that Chris Daughtry would have been on that show, if they hadn't picked someone from outside the country at the last minute. So, angbar, AI "used to be" a "real" talent show, not a popularity contest, or fashion show. I just don't think they'll be able to continue much longer with the "popularity vote among teen girls and guys".(Just my opinion, and you know what they say about those, LOL.)

I love the weather. I love animals. I think that "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" "Bones" and "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" ROCK. As music goes: Yo-Yo Ma, Daughtry, Allyson Krauss (and Union Station), Black Eyed Peas, most any John Williams soundtrack (especially Memoirs of a Geisha and Harry Potter), Wagner, Handel, Stevie Nicks, Bonnie Raitt, and I could go on and on.
