Byrd's Eye View

This is actually my bedtime, but I can hardly sleep because I know AMERICAN IDOL and HOUSE are both on tonight!  No, this is not a completely shameless plug (ok, maybe it is) but this is a set-the-VCR night!

Speaking of that, how many of you have a DVR or TIVO?  Is it worth the price and monthly fees?  A co-worker told me that it would "change my life" and he said that with a wistful, faraway look...

My tape is getting crinkly!  Any suggestions?

I don't know why your post is coming through on myfoxdfw but anyway on to TIVO (DVR).

Tivo is great. It's a lot more versatile than a VCR and the picture quality is digital. DVRs will record the last 30 minutes of live TV into a buffer so you can pause and rewind whatever you're watching.

Personally, I think its worth the investment. Once you have one, your VCR will become a thing of the past.

Wow -- I'm in Dallas-Ft. Worth and didn't even know it...

Thanks for the input. I may have to join the rest of the world in 2007. Does this mean I have to ditch my 8-track??

Many thanks!

I love our DVR. I'm so technologically inept that I can't set the clock on my VCR but I have NO problems figuring out to use the DVR. It is sooooo user friendly. You simply highlight the program you wish to record and hit the record button. You can even program it to record on show each time it comes on. This works out great for my dishy soap opera!!

My seven year old can use the DVR - of course, my seven year old can probably program the clock on my VCR too!!!

Make the investment....I don't think you'll regret it.

Throw out your 8-tracks? NEVER! Where else would you be able to get such high quality Bee Gee's music??

Whew! I'm so glad that I can keep my Bee Gees 8-track...

So do you recommend something that came from the satellite/cable provider or buying something from a retail store?

I'm so inept.

Thanks for your help!

We personally got ours through our satellite provider - just plug and play basically....most satellite/cable providers are usually offering rebates on DVR's which take the cost of the unit down to a minimum...sometimes they are even offering them free of cost to upgrade....

Good luck - let us know what you decide.

I bought a Panasonic VCR/DVD/DVR right after Christmas. I can play my old tapes, and copy them to DVD before they wear out (still haven't done it) and I can record tv shows on the DVR without a subscription from Tivo or whomever. It hooks into my satellite box, hunts down the TV Guide channel, and downloads the menu. I just tell it what I want to record, and voila! I can watch all the shows that come on after my bedtime. Other manufacturers probably make them too, so an internet search should help you find a nice one should you choose to go that route.

What's a VCR?

Funny, put your first money into an ATI All in Wonder card for your PC. Then you can plug your cable from any output source (8-track, casette, 8mm 16mm,vcr, tivo dvr vcr) direct to pc. You can have the ati card record all your weather spots. Then cut them and edit for your portfolio. ATI cards have a cpl glitches but all of a sudden you have Fox on your pc!! Adobe products are good editing tools, but there are others. Hopefully your pc has at least one gig of memory. The newer PC's with the dual core processors are nice for video. Some ATI cards come with Adobe software. I have a feeling though that if Emily would sweet talk the guys in the video room, she could get all the free edited video she wants!

You'll find that about an hour of recording time in high quality dvd mode = @ 2gb of space. Buying 100 to 400 gb external hard drives = about the same money you would have in VCR tapes at the SP speed. You can of course choose to record with a lower quality to reduce the size of the recording.

It's good for your tapes to find an old rewinder. Something about the elasticity of the film needs to be moved. The emulsion on the tape is best to be moved through a machine where you won't screw up the recording or playback heads. Just fast forward and rewind your old tapes to keep them healthy.

I love the weather. I love animals. I think that "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" "Bones" and "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" ROCK. As music goes: Yo-Yo Ma, Daughtry, Allyson Krauss (and Union Station), Black Eyed Peas, most any John Williams soundtrack (especially Memoirs of a Geisha and Harry Potter), Wagner, Handel, Stevie Nicks, Bonnie Raitt, and I could go on and on.
