Roy Ackland and I were only about five years into our journalistic journey producing the “Roy’s Folks” series, when one of those “Consultant” types, asked me the dumbest question imaginable. He said, “Aren’t you guys about to run out of people to feature?” We just laughed.

Our area is very blessed with way more than our share of interesting and talented people. If Roy and I had another twenty years, I don’t think we would even scratch the surface. Take Davidson County for example; I can’t even count the number of stories we’ve done there. Throw a rock in any direction there and you’ll likely hit someone whom we’ve either featured or who we should; Dempsey Essick, Greg Ferrell, Chip Holton, Phil Christman, Bob Timberlake, the list goes on, literally. Now, add another name, Mike Hesalbeck.

Mike Grew up in Davidson County and admits to the influence, area artists shed on his work. He’s a modern day version of a true renaissance man. He’s a musician who loves the outdoors, hunts, fishes, and paints pictures of all the things he loves. About four years ago he had the guts to quit his “day job” to pursue his art career.

Mike Helsabeck is just the latest example of Davidson County’s artistic wealth. He’s also a sample of the still untapped talent pool. Whether it’s artists, craftsmen or just good old characters, that county is chocked full. If we’re ever looking for a good story, we know more than one will await us there. Why is that? I don’t know. The same question could apply to why so many barbecue restaurants are there. Maybe the answer it similar too, who cares, let’s eat.

Nice Mural. Does Rusty live in Davidson County too? Also, are you really a pro frisbee player?

Rusty lives in Iredell County near Downtown Mooresville. With good antennae I bet he could pick up WGHP! Yes, until around 1995 I was on the road full time all over the U.S. doing freestyle demos in Schools, Colleges, City Festivals and Amusement Parks for around 20 years. My last demo was in 2004 for a Pineville festival. I had really put on some pounds! I use that extra weight to rest my tired arms on now. Follow shanesflyingdiscshow.com, scroll down to the photo and video links and I just bet you’ll see some old friends. I salvaged a couple of interviews from CJ Underwood and John Carter. I also managed to salvage some triad area kickers that were done when Cheerwine built a giant can for me to carry around!

David, I am sure you know this but many of your viewers that haven't seen the Charlotte news for awhile may not know that CJ Underwood passed on a few years ago after a fight with cancer. John Carter anchors the morning news.

I remember CJ. I worked in Charlotte for a few years, so I'm very familiar with him. It was sad to see him battle cancer and he will be missed in Charlotte.

Back to the Frisbee thing, do folks still do that? I know Frisbee golf is still pretty popular but like many people I used to toss one them around in the backyard, but now I don't even think I have a Frisbee.

That’s a really involved answer from my end. The short version is that I need to research the current stats. At one point more flying discs were sold than all the balls in all other sports combined. There are many events in Flying Disc Sports. Tom Monroe has kept Disc Golf alive. Ultimate Frisbee Flying Disc has long been the number 1 intramural sport on College campuses with international championships involving over 16 countries. My specialty is Frisbee Freestyle. I concentrated on sharing my abilities with others and planted the seed for Flying Disc Sports in thousands of schools across the US. My ego would like to believe that Flying Disc Sightings have decreased since I left the road, but I doubt it.
I’d love to develop a program with Fox 8 in line with your Fox fit program and visit every school in your viewing area! We could print Mini-Frisbees and other assorted Frisbee Flying Discs with The Fox 8 logo!
I bet we would be a big hit and your sightings and collection of Frisbee Flying Discs would soon improve!

Who am I? Well, I'm a North Carolina native. I've been married for twenty-five years to a wonderful woman who is the mother of my energetic twelve-year-old son. He keeps me young. I have been involved with broadcasting nearly all of my life. My television career began in the late 1970's in Charlotte. Then I was a reporter/photog, better known in the business as a "one-man band." Over the years I've done many different things but I never found my niche until in 1988 when I was asked to shoot and produce a new series here at Fox8. "Roy’s Folks" was born that year and ever since it's been my job to find interesting people and tell their stories. You may not know me because Roy Ackland is the guy in front of the camera and I'm behind it. In fact many people only know me as "the guy who rides with Roy." And so I am. It's been a great ride.
