Congratulations to voters in Iowa and New Hampshire who were interested and motivated enough to actually do something.  We can only hope this is a sign of things to come through the remainder of the primary/caucus process.  These folks are actually interested in the politics, what a concept.

This ends the retail portion of our political program.  From here on out, it's wholesale.  Expect to see a lot of campaign ads on the cable news channels leading up to the 27-state Super Tuesday on February 5.

Before then, South Carolina voters will write the next chapter.  We'll soon find out if favorite son Edwards or neighbor Thompson will get their first wins.  Both need a first or second place finish to stay in the race.  Edwards has a stronger chance of winning South Carolina than Thompson, but both face rising tides of momentum fueled by Obama and Huckabee.  Despite wins in New Hampshire by Clinton and McCain Tuesday, Iowa's winners are the key palmetto state players.

I don't know which North Carolinians think John Edwards is a "favorite son" but I condider him anything but.I think he may have given himself that title when we was running for office in NC (which sure didn't last long once we realized he was no different than any other politician that said one thing before he was elected, then done another once he was in office.) God help us if he was to be elected into office. He couldn't do good for NC, how in the world could he do good for a country? The saddest part is...I am a democrat and feel this way.

Edwards did not spend much time in office in North Carolina. If he had, he would probably done a lot of damage. The only good thing about him was that he resigned office as a Senator when he ran for President. At least we did not have to pay for the do-nothing time he spent there. Personnally, I feel that everyone who runs for office that is already an office holder, should have to resign before applying for another government job.

I agree UV. An elected official should have to resign one office before they can run for another.

Alan, you obviously have some distinction to make with early state caucuses'. Do you mind expanding?

Iowa and New Hampshire are unlike any other caucus/primary because voters there expect to see each of the presidential candidates in person at least once. The expectation is there because Iowa and New Hampshire are traditionally the first states to decide on presidential convention delegates every four years.

Because they're first, candidates want to use impressive finishes in Iowa and New Hampshire to give them momentum to fuel their campaigns into other states.

Campaigns in both states focus on the individual contact of candidates with voters. That is what I meant by the term retail politics. This kind of attention cannot be provided when you have 22 states conducting primaries and caucuses on one day, like Super Tuesday on Feb. 5. South Carolina is getting the most attention right now simply because it's next in the process.

It's the nature of the beast. It's not a perfect system by any means, but it's the only one we have for this year.

Well for the people that want to keep up with all the bickering then they sure do get an ear's full from the media.
